    TERRIE SCHMIDT CROSBY|Updated Aug 28, 2013

The brief but violent thunderstorm that passed through the Odessa area last Sunday evening left damage and much debris in its wake. The sky turned very black indeed, as the storm clouds blew in and the rain poured heavily for several minutes. After the storm passed through, the town of Odessa lost power, but it was restored within about five minutes. Area residents reported damage and other results of the storm to The Record. At the country home of Kelly (Kissler) and Don...

  • Summer fun almost over

    TERRIE SCHMIDT CROSBY|Updated Aug 8, 2013

It is that time of year again when the lazy days of summer (who has those anyway; we certainly don't) give way to the hectic late summer time of county fairs, back-to-school activities, preparation for Odessa's number-one money-making community festival Deutsches Fest, not to mention all of the other local festivals in towns all around us. This week is our back-to-school issue. We haven't even had time to cover the local harvest yet. That will come next week, as will the sched...

Herbert V. Zimbelman has lived in the Odessa area all of his life. The third youngest of 10 children born to Gus and Emma Zimbelman in rural Lincoln County, Herb lived independently and pursued his interests and hobbies despite being profoundly deaf. Until only a couple of years ago, Herb owned his own home, where his basement workshop offered activities that kept him well occupied. Woodcarving was long a favorite hobby. He has created carved animals, airplanes, stagecoaches...

  • Bugsy Malone entertains and delights

    Terrie Schmidt Crosby|Updated Mar 30, 2013

A period piece from an earlier century can be a good learning experience for students. With the musical “Bugsy Malone,” Odessa students got a taste of the “flapper era” in American social history. They appeared to embrace it. Unfortunately, the music seemed a bit complex and out of the range of many of the vocalists. However, the acting was a notch above what one would expect of this age group. From first-graders to high-schoolers, the performers all did a great job of expr...

The Old Town Hall in Odessa has served many functions over its lifetime. On January 10, approximately 15 to 20 townspeople gathered there to discuss the building’s future. Lise Ott is heading up an effort to either repurpose, refurbish or renovate the aging structure, which suffers now from roof leaks, crumbling concrete steps, broken and cracked windows and plumbing problems. Built in 1921, the facility opened December 21 of that year to house the offices of the town governme...

  • IEO files bankruptcy petition

    Terrie Schmidt Crosby|Updated Jan 11, 2013

We had no sooner written our article last week on the uncertain situation at Inland Empire Oilseeds, LLC, and sent our paper off to be printed when we received in the mail that same day notification from the United States Bankruptcy Court in Spokane that IEO had filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy on December 27, 2012. Our call to IEO general manager Joel Edmonds has not been returned. We called the Odessa Union Warehouse on Friday, January 4, and asked to speak to Keith Bailey....

A synopsis of the main events of 2012, as reported in The Odessa Record, follows below: January At the beginning of January 2012, police were following up and investigating the third break-in at Odessa Drug within the past several months. Narcotic drugs were the target and were the only items taken. This third break-in came early on December 26, 2011, even after proprietor Ted Bruya had installed surveillance cameras in the store. Unfortunately for law enforcement personnel,...

  • Pre-holiday layoffs hit IEO

    Terrie Schmidt Crosby|Updated Jan 6, 2013

Inland Empire Oilseeds has once again laid off most of its workforce, including its office staff. As appears to be the norm among American companies, the layoffs came right before Christmas, with most employees being told that the plant hoped to rehire them sometime after the first of the year. The Record has thus far been unable to contact any of the management personnel for a statement on their future plans. Given that this is a family time and much is going on over the...

  • Gobble, gobble becomes gurgle, gurgle

    Terrie Schmidt Crosby|Updated Nov 22, 2012

A new feature, a dunk tank, was unveiled at the 71st annual Lions Club turkey carnival this year. Four volunteers braved the dunk tank: Marlon Schafer, Travis Schuh, Bryce Peterson and Mark DeWulf. A line quickly formed as each volunteer took their turn. At $1 per throw, it was no easy or inexpensive task to hit the small target that would trip the platform and dunk the volunteer. Marlon Schafer’s children tried, but they were unable to connect. Finally, high school senior M...

  • Race for Lincoln County Commissioner a dead heat

    Terrie Schmidt Crosby|Updated Aug 12, 2012

The August 7, 2012 primary election was apparently fairly unappealing to most voters, as very few of them bothered to vote at all. Despite the very low turnout, the Lincoln County race for County Commissioner was one of the closest in the state, with only a few percentage points separating each of the three candidates. As The Record goes to press this week, Mark Stedman had a slight lead over Kim Ramm who had a slight lead over Alan Stromberger. This is one race, where...
