  • Reardan council adopts 2021 budget

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Apr 8, 2021

REARDAN – Unless the approved budget was an April Fool’s Day joke, Reardan is planning to be in the black this year. Council approved an ordinance to adopt the 2021 budget with notes on two funds at its April 1 regular meeting. The town is budgeting for $1,072,783 in revenue and $808,433.42 in expenditures, a $264,349.58 difference. The fund titled “Stimulating Summers” was closed, “having served its purposes,” so any left over funds or debt is to be transferred to the library fund. The criminal justice fund was merged into...

  • Letters to the editor

    Updated Apr 8, 2021

If (last week’s comic) is referring to HR1, which makes election fraud even easier, then it may make some sense. Every fraudulent vote suppresses a legitimate one. However, I believe it refers to the just passed comment sense law passed in GA to combat fraud. Really, except possibly HR1, there hasn't been any voter suppression laws since the Democrat Party was pushing their beloved "Jim Crow" laws. Current new Editor: I know it's difficult for a small scale print newspaper to afford political comics but, you can do better t...

  • Lundgren finds her place on cross country team

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Apr 8, 2021

REARDAN – Like many high school students, Kerstin Lundgren enjoys running with her friends on the cross country team, plays the flute, wants to travel the world after high school and was able to finish every race this season. However, Lundgren had to and will have to overcome an unusual hurdle to achieve these goals. The freshman at Reardan High School is hard of hearing and wears hearing aids. "I can hear just fine without hearing aids, but my ears take everything in all a...

  • The alternative responses to Easter

Steve McLachlan, Pastor, Trinity Bible Fellowship|Updated Apr 8, 2021

I’ve always been baffled by the other response to the resurrection. The response we think about is, “Rejoice! He’s risen from the dead! Have a chocolate bunny!” and so on. That part makes sense (part of it, anyway). But what about the other guys? The Bible says that on the next day – the day between crucifixion and resurrection – the priests went to Governor Pilate and said, “Hey, that Jesus guy said He was going to rise in three days.” Funny they remembered it, because the disciples forgot. “So will you put a guard on the to...

  • Bass, walleye, catfish policy comment period extended

    The Times|Updated Apr 8, 2021

OLYMPIA – The state Department of Fish and Wildlife is extending the window to comment on development of a policy to guide statewide management of non-native game fish. The comment period was extended from April 5 to May 5 after fishermen requested more time to submit comments on a draft policy covering bass, walleye, catfish, crappie and some trout on waterways that connect to the ocean. Typically, Fish and Wildlife tries to manage these and other species through game fish rules. “This is an important policy, and ext...

  • Soaring and falling

    Drew Lawson, The Times|Updated Apr 8, 2021

INDIANAPOLIS – Gonzaga was on top of the world...or table, as it were, after standout freshman guard Jalen Suggs banked in a deep three-pointer from about 40 feet away in overtime to put away pesky UCLA 93-90 in the Final Four April 3 and send the Bulldogs to the national championship game. However, the celebration was short-lived, as the Baylor Bears easily handled Gonzaga 86-70 in that title game two days later to claim the trophy and put an end to the Bulldogs' quest to b...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

Laura Estes, Special to The Record|Updated Apr 8, 2021

Last fall, a basil plant kept growing in a patio container. Due to inattention on my part, it went to seed. Now I have a nice little patch of minuscule seedlings sprouting up. If I remember to cover them at night, I should have plenty to transplant. Basil is a versatile herb, sliced or chopped fresh in salads or garnish, simmered in soups and sauces or baked into quiches and casseroles. With starter plants already in many garden shops, this herb is easy to have fresh for any...

  • Small team, big results

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby, The Record|Updated Apr 8, 2021

ODESSA – After two meets, the Odessa High School girls and boys track and field teams have shown much promise despite having only nine members combined on its rosters. Head coach Travis Schuh said he was pleasantly surprised at how well some of them were performing right out of the starting gate. The Valley Christian Jamboree was held in Spokane Valley on March 25, where the host team took the top spots with both of their teams. The Odessa boys finished fifth, and the Odessa girls finished tenth. For the girls, freshman H...

  • Senate operating budget is proof Democrats can't resist higher spending

Marck Schoesler, Washington State Senator|Updated Apr 8, 2021

The Senate operating budget for 2021-23 was approved on April 1 by a 27-22 vote, with two Democrats joining all Republicans in opposition. It is fitting this plan (Senate Bill 5092) was passed on April Fools’ Day. The sharp spending increase found in this budget can be viewed as a bad joke on Washington taxpayers. Total spending in the Senate budget is $59.5 billion. It’s $7 billion more than the current budget, or equal to a 13% increase in spending. If the Senate plan is enacted, the operating budget will have grown by ove...

  • Union's back-door effort to kill popular charter school bill is telling

Liv Finne, Washington Policy Center|Updated Apr 8, 2021

Lawmakers are rightly showing great concern about improving the quality, graduation rates, equal treatment and fairness in public schools. Some even say the traditional public school system is systemically racist and are demanding solutions. It is certainly true that public schools produce starkly unequal outcomes, with the achievement gap between ethnic groups in math, science and reading wider than ever. Washington has at least 117 state-identified failing public schools,...

HARRINGTON – The Harrington city clerk received two framed photographs from the Fort Meade Museum at Fort Meade, S.D. The museum had no idea how the photos ended up in their building, and Harrington's history of the Cobb family does not include any mention of South Dakota. The two photos were dated 1927, 1) J.M. Cobb and Sons Ten Harrow Teams in the Field near Harrington, Washington and 2) J.M. Cobb and Sons Combines Operating near Harrington, Washington....

  • Easter egg hunt draws small, but lively, crowd

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby, The Record|Updated Apr 8, 2021

ODESSA – The annual Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt took place last Saturday morning after last year's interruption due to Covid. Although the crowd was smaller than usual, the kids appeared to have the usual great time searching for the candy-filled eggs that club members had hidden all over the city park area. As the children waited semi-patiently for the air-horn to sound promptly at 10 a.m., family members visited and took pictures, just happy to be having a live event in t...
