  • Solar, wind parts fill up dumps

    Don C. Brunell|Updated Apr 11, 2024

While wind and solar farms generate “greenhouse gas free” electricity, there are ongoing concerns over their impacts on our environment especially as a rapidly growing number of worn-out blades and panels are landing in landfills. Those blades, housed on giant wind towers reaching over 250-feet in the sky, are starting to reach the end of their useful lives (15 to 20 years) and are being taken down, cut up and hauled to burial sites. Even though over 90 percent of the dec...

  • Honeybee populations are increasing

    Todd Myers|Updated Apr 11, 2024

A recent article in Vox notes that the talk of honeybees disappearing was “greatly exaggerated.” Admitting that his previous stories predicting the collapse of honeybee populations hadn’t aged well, the reporter explained that a recent agricultural census found that the 31 percent increase in honeybees since 2007 is “a larger increase than any other dom...

Barb Schlimmer of Odessa shared the recipe for Sloppy Joe Casserole, a dish she brought to a recent potluck dinner. She found the recipe on all-recipes.com. Chop the...

  • No Miss Reardan program this year

    The Record-Times|Updated Apr 11, 2024

REARDAN — The Reardan-Edwall area won’t have a Miss representative this year. Miss Reardan-Edwall 2024 was canceled after no one applied, according to program organizers. Organizer Gretchen Neal, who has overseen the program since 1999, said a flyer was placed at Reardan High School with anyone interested asked to meet organizers at the downtown fire station one Sunday in February. No one showed up, Neal said. A lack of funds after no fundraising since the COVID-19 pandemic is another factor in the program’s way, Neal said....

  • Bargain Hunting

    Pastor Josh McLachlan|Updated Apr 11, 2024

A favorite pastime of my wife and I is to go thrift shopping and bargain hunting. Whether we are on vacation, or in the city running errands, we try to stop. Why? People have left thrift stores with famous works of art, valuable card collections, or even just a missing piece to the dinnerware or golf bag. They’ve left stores with a cartful of items they got 90% off of. Wherever they shop, the goal is...
