  • Rethinking legislative natural gas bans

    Don C. Brunell, Contributor|Updated Apr 29, 2021

Sometimes being first isn’t good. Such is the case with legislation making Washington the only state to ban natural gas in new homes and commercial buildings. Thankfully, the legislators ended their session in Olympia and left that bad idea on the table. However, it is destined to come back next year. The issue is complicated and expensive. Earlier this year, Gov. Jay Inslee (D) unveiled it as part of a package to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It included a phase out of nat...

And yet, in that same time period, we taxpayers had to foot the bill for enforcement and incarceration. For many — like me the vote to legalize marijuana was not a vote to endorse its use. It was a vote to act in a pragmatic manner. Sim...

  • Time to talk about shingles again

    The Record|Updated Apr 29, 2021

ODESSA – Odessa Clinic manager Barbara Schlimmer has a couple of questions for the local population, “Are you 50 or older? Do you know somebody 50 or older?” The reason she asks is because shingles is a painful rash illness that can lead to long-term nerve pain that, in some cases, can last years after the shingles rash disappears. This nerve pain can limit daily activity for many years afterward. Shingles is not a one-time-only condition. It can re-occur throughout a lifetime. As we get older, the risk of shingles and its re...
