  • Welcome to My Kitchen

    Laura Estes|Updated Nov 23, 2011

Threats that morning snow showers may materialize by Thanksgiving Day have been just that; threats (so far). Snow or not, it is always a good time for soup. Vicki Strang recently shared her recipe for Gypsy Soup, a highly seasoned vegetable mixture that would easily accommodate the addition of leftover turkey and feed a dozen or so football fans on game day. Gypsy Soup 4 Tbsp olive oil 2 cups chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped celery 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 cups peeled, diced...

For the week for October 31 through November 5, Kendall Todd of Odessa joined classmate Jared King (for 1B football) in being named WIAA/Seattle Times State Athletes of the Week for 1B volleyball. Through an oversight or some kind of confusion at the WIAA, her information was not forwarded to Odessa-Harrington athletic director Darin Reppe until last Friday. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that the information cited on the Seattle Times website stated that Todd...

  • Lions Club Turkey Carnival fun for the whole family

    Terrie Schmidt Crosby|Updated Nov 23, 2011

For the past 70 years, the Odessa Lions Club has been treating the community to its annual Turkey Carnival. This year, club members added a little extra atmosphere with the presence of two live turkeys, one male and one female, in a pen near the bingo announcer’s table. The turkeys belong to the Joe McNeil family, which raises poultry on its farm near Odessa. They were only there for show, however, and went back home after the carnival. More than 150 frozen turkeys were won l...

  • Letter to the Editor: Jack rabbit absence noted

    Updated Nov 23, 2011

When reading the story of the 1935 rabbit drive near Irby, I wondered if it was about jack rabbits. I can't remember seeing one of them since the 1950s. I wonder if anyone has seen a jack rabbit on their property lately? The drives really must have worked, as they are gone, or I am not looking in the right spots when we come over for a visit. Chuck Wood Gig Harbor...

  • Letter to the Editor: Education questioned

    Updated Nov 23, 2011

On a recent trip to Australia President Obama told a group of Aussie students that their counterparts in his country had "fallen behind" when it comes to math and science, saying he wants to reform the public school system. Obama also asserted that poor children don't get "support they need when they're very young" and are "already behind" when they enter grammar school. This from a person who uses a teleprompter to speak to grade school kids, who pays $30,000 per child to put his kids in private school. But for once he may...

  • Thank goodness for farmers

    Don C Brunell|Updated Nov 23, 2011

How about some good news heading into the holidays? It comes from our nation’s farmers and ranchers. Agriculture is an economic sector where America has not lost its edge. In fact, it is a bright spot in a persistently glum economy. The U.S. Agriculture Department expects our nation’s agricultural exports to reach a record $137 billion this year and grow by another $2.3 billion in 2012. While our nation has an overall trade deficit, our agricultural sector has a trade sur...

  • Area experiences 4.6 quake

    Updated Nov 23, 2011

Most residents of the Odessa area remained blissfully unaware and slept right through last Friday’s seismic event. Initially estimated at 4.0 magnitude, seismologists later upgraded the earthquake to 4.6. Callers to the KPQ radio station in Wenatchee are said to have felt the tremor in L...
