Spring Fling successes reported across town

Spring Fling is over, and most residents of Odessa can heave a sigh of relief. Preliminary reports from various organizers indicate that the event was a success here in Odessa, and the first coordinated effort with the neighboring town of Harrington brought additional visitors to both communities.

Quilt Show

Quilt Show co-chair Laura Estes reported that the show drew 283 visitors this year, up 31 from 2011. She added that she personally spoke to people from Arlington, Yakima, Everett, Lake Sammamish, Spokane, Deer Park and the Tri Cities, to name just a few. Raffle ticket proceeds were up $17 from last year.

Horseshoe Tournament

Results of the Spring Fling Horseshoe Tournament which took place at the pits adjacent to Finney Field Saturday April 28 have been released.

The tournament is a WSHPA (Washington State Horseshoe Pitchers Association) sanctioned tournament, one of two that occur annually in Odessa (the other being an open tournament during Deutschesfest.)

Class A: Russ Phillips, first; Lee Zalesny, second.

Class B: John McCarthy, first; Jim Links, second.

Class C: Cindy Reeves, first; Hans Rasmussen, second.

Class D: Loren Totusek, first; Richard Falenkamp, second.

Fire Dept. Auction

Fire Chief Don Strebeck reported that the sale was a success in its second year. There were approximately 80 registered bidders, and every item was sold. “It was a beautiful day,” said Strebeck, “but I’m not sure if having the auction during Spring Fling helped or not.”

Car Wash

Odessa’s Knowledge Bowl advisor Ellen Holman reported that the Knowledge Bowl Team washed over 60 cars Saturday to raise funds for the team’s trip to national competition in New Orleans on Memorial Day weekend. She said that raffle ticket sales and Papa Murphy pizza orders also went well over the weekend, but that the team still had “quite a way to go” to earn enough to pay for the trip. “Odessa has been very generous,” added Holman.

Trap Shoot

According to Cindy Groh of the Odessa Gun Club, the annual trapshoot, which is in its 21st year, had fewer squads shooting this year. Groh was uncertain whether the lower turnout was due to the opening of fishing season or some other factor.

Yard and other sales

There were too many yard sales all over town for us to catch up with everyone. However, Faye King reported that the first year of the indoor yard sale at the community center drew mixed results. “It was well received by the public,” she said, “but there weren’t many yard sales there.” She added that the Friends of the Library book sale did very well and that the organization was happy with the results. When asked if she would organize the indoor sales again next year, King replied, “Maybe.”

Leora Nixon of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW reported that the group’s bake sale held at the corner of First Avenue and Division Street was “One of the best fundraisers we’ve had.”
