"Golden Flask" recaptured at annual science challenge

On May 24, nine schools from the Bi-County joined Odessa for the Third Annual Bi-County Science Challenge. Odessa, Wilbur, Davenport, Liberty, Lind, Sprague, Reardan, Ritzville and Harrington arrived at the Odessa Gym at 9 a.m. to compete in the third ever science-based “Junkyard Wars.” Each school brought a team of six students to vie against the other schools for the traveling trophy. Team Odessa consisted of Kira Powell, Markus Smith, Justin Hauge, Griffey Powell, Thorsen Wehr and Carsen Weber.

Created by the science teachers from each of the participating school systems, each team had two objectives.

Objective 1: After the students were formed into separate teams comprising a mixture from each school, each team had to build the tallest building that would withstand the weight of as many pennies as possible, using the materials of only spaghetti noodles and paper. After 30 minutes, work came to a stop, and the team with the tallest tower that also held the most pennies was built by Odessa’s Griffey Powell, along with Dakotah Niewald from Creston and Dylan Crow from Wilbur.

Objective 2: Using the limited supplies available, each school team engineered a device for hauling all 100 pennies from Objective 1. The team with the quickest time from start to finish (four meters), while carrying all 100 pennies, was deemed the winner of Objective 2.

According to Odessa science teacher Jeff Wehr, the teams even worked through their lunches. Team Odessa was the winner of the Third Annual Bi-County Science Challenge and took back the Golden Flask Award.
