Information Day topics: Wool, wolves, lamb value

The Spokane Area Sheep Producers’ Association will hold its annual Shepherd’s Information Day Saturday, December 8, in Spokane, announces Tom Platt, Washington State University Area Extension educator in Davenport. Platt says it should be an interesting day for sheep producers, young and old alike. The program will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. with a short business meeting to follow. It will be held at the WSU Spokane County Extension Education Center at N. 22 Havana.

The first topic is specialty wool marketing, presented by Sandra Willford from Deer Park. Next, Jayne Deardorff from Colville will explain how to evaluate fleeces and grade wool. Then, Dr. Ben Smith from WSDA will describe WSDA’s plan for preventing introduction of foreign animal disease and preventing agro-terrorism.

For lunch, Spokane Area Sheep Producer’s Association board members will give tips on cooking lamb, followed by a potluck lunch.

After lunch, WDFW Regional Director Steve Pozzanghera will describe Washington’s Wolf Conservation and Management Plan. The program will conclude with a discussion by WSU’s Dr. Shannon Neibergs on Understanding USDA Weekly National Lamb Market Summary and using it to value live lamb and lamb carcasses.
