The Best of you

It seems at times that every human and every animal in the world is trying simultaneously to be better than all the others. One more mile, one more page, one more year; all for a bit more bragging rights than someone else.

Darwinism may suggest that this is a survival instinct, but must we humans embrace the principals of survival of the fittest? Personally, I don't believe it's necessary. Not that friendly competition isn't fun, but why strive for perfection when chances are that, for pretty much every kind of talent, there is someone out there who can do it better than you?

Now, there is always, always room for improvement, and by no means should you give up simply because you fell flat trying to be the crème de le crème. but do you really need to do six thousand push-ups just to prove that no one else can? Probably not; I can't even do six.

While it seems painfully cliché, the only thing you should be concerned about is doing better than your last attempt. You can always try harder, but you don't need to be all broken up just because you didn't try harder than everyone else. The only person you need to out-do is yourself.

"There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self."- Ernest Hemingway
