Odessa-Harrington swept Herdsmanship Contest awards at Livestock Show

The Odessa FFA Chapter and Agriculture course students have been very busy attending the Spokane Jr. Livestock Show, gearing up for the Washington State FFA Convention, and preparing for their annual banquet.

Sixteen FFA members from Odessa and Harrington exhibited their animals in the Market Quality and Fitting and Showing classes at The Spokane Jr. Livestock Show, May 6 –11. The students received purple, blue and red ribbons on their Supervised Agriculture Experience projects over the four-day show; as well as good prices. The FFA members from Odessa were: Steven Braun, two market hogs; Katelyn Worley, two market hogs; Caleb Singer, heifer; Max Greenwalt, prospect steer; Alexis Burdick, two market lambs; and Makayla Baird, two market lambs; and from Harrington: Isabelle Phillips, one Market Hog; Lanessa Simon, one Market Hog; Joey Buell, one Market Hog; Dylan Shockley, one Market Hog; Derek Montgomery, one Market Hog; Jacob Montgomery, one Market Hog; James Mann, one Market Hog; Samantha Nighswonger, one Market Goat; Brilee Sewall, one Market Goat; Debra Armstrong, one Market Lamb; and William Mann, one Carcass Hog and one Market Steer. Each member did an excellent job raising, showing, and marketing their Supervised Agriculture Experience projects and should be commended on their hard work and overall successes.

Katelyn Worley was selected by her peers to serve as the FFA Barn Captain in the Hog Barn for the second year, where she attended morning meetings, promoted the hog barn, assisted during the show, and worked with FFA chapters and 4-H groups from Washington, Idaho, and Montana.

The two chapters worked very hard and take pride in their herdsmanship duties (keeping pens and aisles clean, caring for the livestock, educating the public, answering questions posed by the judge, and setting an example in the barn) when they are not showing. The chapters are scored on a 100-point scale in the morning and afternoon and go up against all the other FFA chapters in attendance at the show (over 40 other chapters and schools). This year the two chapters swept the Herdsmanship Contest where awards are given in all four barns (beef, lamb, goat, and hog). The two chapters won five trophies and cash prizes for their outstanding efforts. The groups were recognized prior to the sale starting on Saturday and Sunday.
