Pumpkins, flowers engage HHS's class on horticulture

On October 14, 2014, Linda Colbert had the horticulture class come up to her house and pick pumpkins for the retirement home in Ritzville, the Shriners Hospital of Spokane and the local food bank. After arriving at her house, Linda gave quick instructions, broke us up into groups and sent us to work. ShaeLyn Nuner, Stormy Stiles and Kamryn Alaina were in charge of picking the pumpkins. John Tanke and Alex Bruce were tasked with pushing the wheelbarrows full of pumpkins from the patch to the next station, where Evie Mann was in charge of washing them off. After they were all clean, Colton Jacobsen, Darrin Bowers and Brandon Bragg dried off the pumpkins and separated them into boxes. Afterward, Linda supplied cookies and drinks.

Later that week, the horticulture class took a field trip to Creech Greenhouse and some of the Manito Park Gardens. After arriving at Creech Greenhouse, the class was shown the proper way to take cuttings off of plants, and given a behind-the-scenes look at how they prepare their soil and raise their poinsettias. The horticulture class bought some poinsettias, and plan to finish growing them.

The next stop was Duncan Garden at Manito Park where the class stopped for lunch. Afterward, they went off to explore Duncan Garden, the Perennial Garden, the Rose Garden and the Conservatory, all filled with plants.
