Titans win first match, lose next two at state tournament

As reported last week in The Record, the District Championship volleyball game November 8 at Northwest Christian High School gave the O-H Titans the number-one spot in the district.

At the state 1B volleyball tournament in the Yakima SunDome on Friday, November 14, the Titans started off well playing Providence Classical Christian in the first round. O-H defeated them in three straight by scores of 26-24, 25-23 and 25-8.

Odessa's Zoe Clark was awarded the sportsmanship medal. Leading in service aces and assists was Shelbey Watkins with 8 and 17, respectively. Leading in blocks was Jordyn Tanke with 5. Lanessa Simon pounded out 7 kills to lead that category, and Jenna Shafer led the team in digs with 8.

Later on Friday, the Titans faced off against Pomeroy, the eventual tournament winner. The Titans lost three straight games by scores of 25-14, 25-6 and 25-17.

MaKayla Baird of Odessa was awarded the sportsmanship medal in this match. Jordyn Tanke led her teammates in three different areas, with 3 services aces, 5 blocks and 8 digs. Shelbey Watkins had 8 assists and Zoe Clark had 4 kills.

Moving into the loser's bracket on Saturday, the Titans lost to Quilcene 3 games to 1 by scores of 25-22, 25-16, 18-25 and 25-13.

Katelyn Worley was awarded the sportsmanship medal in the match. Worley also led her teammates in service aces with 2. Shelbey Watkins had 23 assists, and Jenna Shafer had 20 digs. Tanke led in both blocks and kills with 4 and 11, respectively.

This second loss eliminated O-H from further competition. No trophy this year for O-H but nevertheless a very respectable showing.
