Rain delayed wheat harvest, produced another in 1940

100 years ago

October 15, 1915

Bank robber kills himself. A lone bandit walked into the Wilson Creek State Bank during the lunch hour last Saturday and forced C.T. Griesinger, assistant cashier, who was alone, at the point of a gun to enter the vault. He then turned the combination lock on the vault door and took all of the gold and currency and a part of the silver in the money changer, about $1,200, helped himself to an automatic pistol under the teller’s window and walked out the front door.

He ended his life three hours later, after being severely wounded in a battle with posses of citizens, and $1,140 in gold and currency was recovered.

October 3, 1940

When the rest of the farmers were harvesting, rainfall set in and delayed the work, benefitting the still growing crop of Joe C. Laney. This week, he had his own harvest delayed as rains set in. Wet weather has resulted in wheat taking a second growth, some of which has headed out.

October 14, 1965

The Record continued its series on Odessa’s children with pictures of eight youngsters on the front page: Wade Walter, Bernie Dale Swearington, Jimmy Wacker, Eugene Ryster, Debbie Kay Griggs, Lynn Renee Monroe, Gina Beth Schell and Brian Wraspir.

The Odessa Tigers football team fell to the Ritzville Broncos despite holding them defensively for the first three quarters. Coach Phil Roth’s point leaders in the Tiger Club were Larry Lobe, Tom Schafer, Rick Walter, Russ Kruckenberg, Larry Iverson and Jim Evavold.

Odessa’s Larry Dean Zagelow became engaged to June Iris Dutko of Columbus, Ohio.

October 18, 1990

A high school agriculture program that includes practical experience with hydroponics and aquaculture was described Monday night for the Odessa School District board of directors. Ag instructor Richard Donaldson said the district received a $5,040 grant from the state and additional funding for a computer system. He presented a series of options and costs for the board to consider.

Don Walter, editor and publisher of The Odessa Record, was awarded first place among Washington newspapers for community service in support of the Odessa School District by the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association at their annual convention held this year in Wenatchee.

Miss Odessa Andrea Kuch and her princesses Alesia Best, Andrea Largent and Sara Fink were pictured displaying the many awards won by the Odessa Community Float at various area festivals held throughout the spring, summer and early fall.
