Masons award bikes for reading

The annual Bikes-for-Books presentation by Odessa Masonic Lodge No. 156 was held April 1 in the third-grade classroom at P.C. Jantz Elementary School. Boys and girls in the third and fourth grades were eligible for the drawing as a reward for high reading achievement.

The first name drawn was for the girl's bike, and the winner was Hayden Schuh, who made a rapid trip to the front of the room to claim her prize.

Next, youthful courtesy was displayed when two boys' names were drawn, namely Chad Strebeck and Zach Claassen. Each of them already owned a bike and politely declined their prize so that other students could have a chance for a bike. The lucky third name drawn was that of Carter Zigan, who proudly raced to the front of the room and accepted his new bicycle.

This is an annual event of Odessa Lodge No. 156, Free and Accepted Masons. Dennis Thompson, Master of the Lodge, presented the bikes. Bikes were assembled for the event by Michael Kiesz, Senior Warden of the lodge.

Odessa Lodge also hosts the annual Community Turkey Dinner which takes place in the 'Old Town Hall on Thanksgiving. Scholarship offerings are also made available each year through the sponsorship of the Washington State Grand Lodge and administered by Odessa Lodge.
