Volunteers clean up golf course

Harrington

Golf & Country Club

With sunny skies and beautiful weather all day Saturday, April 2, approximately 35 to 45 people worked at the Harrington Golf & Country Club course for most of the day. Some were students earning community service hours. By 12:30 p.m. burgers and soft drinks were served to the crew, and some continued to work until 3 p.m. The clean-up project was considered a great success with good support from the community. Trees at the golf course had sustained some damage during local wind storms, and quantities of debris in the form of tree limbs, pine cones and needles were hauled from the golf course. Membership in the Harrington Golf and Country Club is presently about 6o people. Melissa Gilmore has begun her second season at the clubhouse and restaurant; Artie Banko has been hired as the new greenskeeper. The season is open and they are ready for business.

Ain't That Grand!

As will be recalled, the Harrington Opera House Society acquired its 7'1" Boston Grand piano by Steinway on March 15. Since its arrival Heather Safe, piano instructor, has been escorting her students individually to the auditorium stage to have their lessons on this grand piano. These students include Lydia and Bella Mattozzi; Katelyn, Austin and Justin Vaughn; Elaine VanBelle; Colleen Haugen and Zach Bruce. The grand is closed after each use. Members of Society who play the piano have continued to hellp it "settle in" by practicing when their schedules permit. If you are in the neighborhood, listen at the main door and you might enjoy a free concert.

Studebaker Garage

Activity is again seen in the yard and building of the Studebaker Garage, owned and operated by Allen Barth since his purchase of the former Harrington Garage in 2011. The building was constructed in 1916 following the fire of the OK Barn, owned by Charlton & Charlton (Clyde & Frank). The contractor was J.O. Kerrick of Spokane. In addition to being the Harrington Garage, it was later known as Harrington Motor Co. and the Ford Motor Company. Bill Hose purchased the plant from Frank Charlton in July of 1926 and his brother Howard worked with him through a period of 25 years. It was claimed by W.B. Hose that by 1926 he had sold 153 Model A and 62 Model T cars prior to his purchase of this building. In 1951, W.B. Hose turned the keys over to Howard, who continued until his retirement in 1978.

Under the recent ownership by Allen Barth, this establishment has been the scene of four annual car shows, now touted as Cruizin' Harrington; May 21, 2016 will be the Fifth Annual Car Show. Barth is gathering his crews for the big event and preparing the building and the automobiles for the grand event. His enthusiasm is contagious and his engaging personality draws excitement for the upcoming event. Studebakers have been his lifetime hobby, and he has been actively restoring them full-time for the past 15 years.

Entry fees are $12 per car, and there are at least 11 categories or classes with ribbons, trophies and cash prizes offered. Hours will be 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. at which time the awards will be given out, and individuals must be present to win. Activities will take place throughout the town.

Zion Methodist

Interest shown in the Zion German Methodist Church, now known as Zion United Methodist Church, has spurred the addition of more details. Although the Articles of Incorporation were not filed until 1886, the list of charter members was dated June 13, 1884. Those members were Adam Buehler (pastor), Ludwig Hoffmann, Henrietta Hoffmann, Julius Hoffmann, Emil Kruger, Henry Kruger, Albertina Kruger, Gottlieb Mielke, Minna Mielke, August Bursch and Henrietta Bursch. One might have anticipated that the name of Susanna Kruger, mother of Wilhelmina Kruger Kruger Mielke (Minna), would have been on this list; however, Susanna died May 22, 1884 at the age of 81 years.

Members added in 1885 included Ida Hoffman, Thomas Hubenthal, Bertha Huesman, Roman Kruger, Minne Kruger, Augusta Kruger, Luise Knack and Henry Krueger. In 1887, Herman Kruger and Herman Knack joined the growing church. In 1888, G.D. Kunke, Augusta Kunke, Cherlotte Kunke, Edward Kunke, August and Emilie Kron, Magaretha Kurtz, Albertine Mielke, George and Ana Maurer, Michael Maurer, Sophe Maurer, Magareta Maurer, Will Maurer and Ana K. Maurer. All joined prior to Washington becoming a state. (Spellings herein were found in the church ledger.)
