Eight Reardan wrestlers advance

SPOKANE - Reardan scored 122 points to place fifth in Northeast B Sub-Regional Wrestling Tournament at the Spokane Convention Center, Feb. 2-3. Eight Screaming Eagles qualified for the 2B Regional Wrestling Tournament to be held Feb. 10.

Joey Matusik placed first in the 106-pound weight class. In his first match, he pinned Chance Degon of Liberty in 18 seconds. He won his second match in sudden victory over Micah Rocha of Northwest Christian. Matusik has a 36-9 record.

Alex Matusik, wrestling at 120 pounds, also placed first. He pinned Parker Port of Asotin in 1:20 and Cody Phillips of Colfax in 1:32. He improved his record to 36-12.

Coen Caldwell and Carson Kline wrestled in the 138-pound weight class. Caldwell pinned Raymond Lasz of Liberty in 3:16 and Moxon Strobel of Liberty in 3:38.

Carson Kline pinned Wyatt Rosman of Lind-Ritzville in 1:23. The teammates faced off in the match for first place. Kline pinned Caldwell in 2:28 to improve his record to 36-5.

Caldwell improved his record to 23-12.

Wrestling at 150 pounds, H.K. Bird dropped both of his matches. Thorne Tissue of Liberty pinned him in 3:16 and Austin Campbell of Colfax pinned him in 4:21.

Sterling McLaughlin placed third in the 175-pound weight class. He won his first match by an 11-9 decision over Travis Redburn of Lind-Ritzville. He lost his second match to Joey Matherly of Liberty.

In the consolation match, McLaughlin pinned Koyen Fortune of Waitsburg in 35 seconds. He won the third place match by pinning Peyton Cannon of Pomeroy in 1:20.

McLaughlin improved his record to 27-16.

Conner Kline placed third at 190 pounds. He pinned Coleman Green of Liberty in 50 seconds before being pinned by Curtis Winona of Pomeroy in 4:10. In the consolation semifinal, Kline pinned Jarod Hankins of Waitsburg in 17 seconds.

In the third place match, Kline again pinned Green, this time in 51 seconds. Kline's record on the season is 20-9.

Carson Durbin, wrestling at 215 pounds, placed second. After receiving a bye in the first round, he pinned Austin Stein of Asotin in 3:19.

In the first place match, he lost to Gabriel Smith of Lind-Ritzville via pin in 3:46. Durbin's record is 31-15.

Danika Bretz, wrestling at 170 pounds, placed second in her weight class. After receiving a bye in the first two rounds, she defeated Emilia Klewin of Lind-Ritzville by a 9-2 decision.

She lost the first place match to Emma Villa of Royal via pin.

"My guys rocked, and Danika was awesome," Reardan head coach Arron Mauzay said. "She defeated a girl who had beaten her three times this year."

The boys regional tournament will be at Liberty High School Saturday, Feb. 10. The girls regional tournament will be at Quincy High School on the same date.
