Davenport boys sixth at districts

SPOKANE VALLEY-Despite Jaeger Jacobsen's 33-point effort, the Davenport boys fell to Kettle Falls 71-66 in the 2B District 7 5th/6th Place game at West Valley High School Saturday, Feb. 10.

The Gorillas finished their District run with a pair of losses after a 72-54 defeat to Liberty Friday, Feb. 9.

Davenport hung with the Lancers and trailed by just two at halftime after Jacobsen's 3-pointer at the buzzer made it 33-31. But the third quarter and second half belonged to Liberty, which outscored the Gorillas 17-8 to take a double digit lead Davenport couldn't overcome.

Jacobsen led Davenport with 19 points, while Caige Colbert had 14 points for the Gorillas.

"They were able to execute better than we were pretty consistently," Davenport head coach Matt Henry said. "They're a good team, pretty senior-heavy. They're starting to execute real well down the stretch."

Liberty would go on to defeat Northwest Christian to finish third at Districts.

After falling behind 8-3 in the early minutes against Kettle Falls, Davenport went on a 13-2 run to take a 16-10 lead.

The Bulldogs' Mace Thivierge shot the lights out in the second quarter, scoring 13 points, nine of which came from behind the arc. Kettle Falls took a 31-28 lead at halftime.

Kettle Falls scored the first five points of the second half to extend its lead to 36-28. At that point, Jacobsen, Caige Colbert and Maddox Schumacher hit 3-point shots to fuel a run that gave Davenport a 39-38 lead with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Over the next four minutes, Thivierge and Talan Fishereach hit two 3-point shots to help the Bulldogs extend their lead to 53-46.

Jacobsen and Beau Copenhaver saved their best play for the last quarter. Their 18 combined points brought Davenport back.

With seconds left in the game, the Gorillas had a chance to send the game into overtime, but a turnover allowed the Bulldogs to score and to hold on for the 71-66 win.

Jacobsen led all players in scoring with 33 points. Schumacher added 13 points.

"We played how we wanted to play," Henry said, "but it's the little things in these games that turns the tide. I tip my hat to the other team. They worked hard. It's hard to accept this when it's so close. We just couldn't get over the hump."

Davenport will play District 6's best team, Lake Roosevelt in the District 6/7 Crossover Basketball Tournament at Wenatchee High School at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16. The winner of that game will advance to state.
