Schuh resigns as girls basketball coach

ODESSA - After 14 years as the head coach of high school basketball teams here, Travis Schuh has announced his resignation from the position. Schuh coached the boys team for seven years, then succeeded that with seven years coaching the girls team.

His resignation lines up with the graduation of his youngest daughter, Hayden, who was a standout on the basketball team whose season ended after the District 7 1B Tournament this year.

"With my youngest graduating, I got to coach both my daughters," Schuh, who also coached his eldest daughter, Caitlyn, at Odessa said. "Plus, I'm getting married this year in June, so there's a lot of factors that made now the right time."

Schuh said upon marriage, he will likely have to commute from his fiancée's current residence in Coulee City, creating long hours in the wintertime during basketball season. Additionally, Hayden Schuh recently signed to run track at Spokane Falls Community College, and Travis Schuh wants to be available to attend indoor meets next winter.

"(I'll miss) getting to hang out with the kids...to see them in the classroom and succeed in other parts of life," Schuh, a high school math teacher at the high school, said.

A return to basketball coaching is possible someday, but Schuh said he is also exploring transitioning to officiating.

"They need referees," Schuh said. "I've been around the game since I was a little kid, and I know all the rules. I think that could be a good transition...I can't just sit at home and do nothing."

Schuh's last season as boys head coach was the freshman class that included Ryan Moffet and Camden Weber. That team advanced to state.

And last season, the Odessa girls advanced to the Spokane Arena for the state 1B girls tournament for the first time in school history.

"I'm a competitive guy. I love the challenges that come with (coaching)," Schuh said.

Schuh plans to remain the head high school track and field coach in Odessa.
