Odessa man hurt in house fire

Allen in critical condition at Harborview

ODESSA — A local man was badly burned in a backyard fire and flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle this week. Mark Allen reportedly suffered lung damage and body burns after a fire ignited in his 303 South Alder Street yard Sunday, March 24.

Harborview Medical Center officials confirmed Allen remained in the hospital’s intensive care unit at press time.

Lincoln County Fire District No. 3 rural chief Roger Sebesta said a call of a backyard fire came shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday. The official cause of the fire remains under investigation by the fire marshal.

The fire was extinguished after 15 to 20 minutes, Sebesta said.

Odessa Police Chief Ericka Rose told Town Council Tuesday, March 26 the fire involved propane, while Sebesta said Allen may have been cutting iron with a chop saw.

Rose told Council that Allen suffered burns in over 30% of his body.

Allen’s significant other, Glenda Mankus, also reportedly suffered minor injuries but was able to drive herself to the hospital, officials said.

No damage was done to the home structure, Sebesta said.

Reports state that Allen is a metal salvager by trade.
