  • Harrington news

    Updated Oct 30, 2017

Welcoming sight A normal view of the main drag (Third St.) in Harrington might show cars near the grocery store and bank, some days no available parking; and near city hall there might be four cars on the street with several in the parking lot on a busy day. Some car activity appears for Senior meals, and on rare days, cars line the street for a monthly gathering in the Memorial Hall. It is now a welcoming sight to see daily traffic stop for the offerings of the Post and...

  • Meet your neighbors

    Vivanne Poe|Updated Oct 30, 2017

A lot of leaves have fallen on our property, and I have put them in the garden. Fall is definitely in the air, with some sunny days and some rainy days. As I am writing this column, it is one of those rainy days. I am thankful for sunny people like Lynne Wenick, who make the rainy days brighter. I had a very pleasant visit and interview with Lynne as she told me her story. She was born and raised in Twisp, Wash. to parents Lela and Garl Price. Her mother grew up in Methow and...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

    Laura Estes|Updated Oct 26, 2017

Fall has arrived with below freezing nights and windy afternoons. Time for warm and comforting meals. Recently I was in on a discussion about ham and beans served over cornbread, and how it is almost impossible to reproduce recipes from times gone by. Sometimes it is the people and the surroundings that made up part of the remembered flavor. So with no attempt to reproduce any recipe, just offering something good to try, I include Elsie's Bean Soup and Barb’s Corn Bread E...

  • Town Council

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Oct 26, 2017

After much debate and a thorough search of the town’s records, the council voted to uphold prior legislation and refuse to allow animal husbandry to take place at the school shop. Based on the town’s comprehensive plan, Ordinance 519 prohibiting livestock within the town limits and documents drafted in 1999, the council voted not to override those provisions. As far as the school’s ag program is concerned, however, it appeared that the newly acquired lot (the Viola Els property) would provide access to land that is already zo...

  • Letter to the Editor: Free press is needed if democracy is to flourish

    Updated Oct 26, 2017

To the Editor: The best cleansing agent to keep government accountable is a free press. Before the United States was created, the colonists recognized the importance of and necessity for a free press. The trial of Peter Zenger in 1733 points to that. Alexander Hamilton defending him, Zenger won the right to print freely, even articles critical of the New York governor and his corruption. Rob Coffman, Lincoln Co. Commissioner|Updated Oct 26, 2017
