The tale of the rumor

Although The Odessa Record avoids publishing rumors, the Record obliged the people of Harrington by publishing in the October 13, 2013 issue the rumor that the Harrington Haus was closing its doors for failure to keep the building up to code. Gene and Pamela (Meyer) Dietrich of Davenport had operated the business since Roy and Cora Rae Meyer died in 1991. Since that closing day, Harrington has functioned without a year-round restaurant.

The Harrington Golf & Country Club furnished meals during the golf season but closed every winter due to lack of insulation and the need to divide the water line. At present, if the water is on, it is on to the clubhouse and the greens, and when off, it is off to both locations. For two winter seasons the hungry have found sustenance at Harrington Foods and were grateful to find food to tide them over.

Since October, 2013, the Harrington Chamber of Commerce, the Harrington PDA and the Harrington Historic Preservation Commission have held think tanks at their individual meetings in the hope that someone would take an interest in salvaging the Harrington Haus or that Dietrichs would consider investing the money to bring it up to code if the townspeople were willing to help with the labor.

Some discussions were held regarding helping to clean the building to make it more appealing for the real estate market. Quite a number of "bites" were taken and the building was shown to prospective buyers. Long periods of inactivity seemed to indicate that the building would sit idle until eventual water damage would take its toll.

This week a new rumor was heard. The Harrington Haus may have new owners, and they are to take over March 5, provided the tail is not wagging the dog. In spite of the removal of nearly all of the kitchen supplies and booths by Dietrichs, the potential new owners believe they possess enough restaurant equipment to furnish the establishment, which they intend to name Harrington Family Dining. If you happen through town after March 5, glance behind the Harrington Haus and see if the rumor has teeth. There might first appear a truck to begin hauling out damaged carpets and ceiling tiles.
