Menno Country Auction draws a hungry crowd

The Mennonite Country Auction held last Saturday drew a large crowd to the country church located about 11 miles outside of Odessa. People came from far and wide to sample the homemade cider, ice cream and other delectables. Others came for the beautiful quilts and other hand-crafted items in wood or metal. With everything from German sausage to Greek gyros, plus kraut runzas (the Mennonite version of Odessa’s kraut ranzas), green bean soup and African nut stew, the offerings to the noontime crowd ensured that every seat in the eating area was filled.

A children’s play area was roped off and contained a bounce house among other fun activities. A section called Ten Thousand Villages offered items from around the world, from free-trade coffee and olive oil to hand-made items from many different countries.

Other vendors offered repurposed silver spoons, rummage items, potatoes, nuts and homemade jams, jellies and baked goods.

The auction itself began after the noon hour, and the bidding was brisk from the very beginning. Many beautiful quilts and wall hangings were snapped up by interested buyers.

The weather cooperated with sunshine and temperatures that were not too hot and not too cold. It was a beautiful day to be out in the countryside at a fun event for a good cause.
