Unwrap gift of reading for Christmas

The P.C. Jantz Elementary School will again be hosting a family holiday reading and math event for students in Pre-K through fifth grade. Students and parents are invited to enjoy the many festive activities. The event will take place in the school cafeteria on Monday, December 5 starting at 6:30 p.m. New and popular activities will be offered in the game and craft centers.

Upon signing in, each families will receive a ticket that tells them the order in which to go to different centers. In the craft center children can make a Snowmen Count Down craft along with unique snowflake crafts and other holiday projects. Games are Christmas-themed and include hands-on math activities. Some even have prizes!

An ever popular story teller, Dee Deife, will share the traditional Christmas Poem, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Tasty snacks will be available throughout the evening.

Events of this type are encouraged to be sponsored by Title 1-A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act which provides financial assistance to states and school districts to meet the needs of educationally at-risk students. The goal of Title I is to provide extra instructional services and activities which support students identified as failing or most at risk of failing the state’s challenging performance standards in mathematics, reading, and writing. The Learning Assistance Program also contributes by offering supplemental services for K–12 students scoring below grade-level standard in English language arts and mathematics.

Families are encouraged to continue the tradition of wrapping new, used or already owned books for their children to unwrap and read each night before Christmas. In an effort to support math as well as literacy, children may also make, play and take home math games. Donations of books and gift wrap, along with parent help, is always welcome.
