Greg Rice, riding in the Super Senior A class, won the helmet donated as a prize by Odessa Foods.
Odessa eighth-grader Keith Strebeck placed first in the White Knuckle contest in the 15 and under age bracket.
The conditions for last weekend's races put on by the Stumpjumpers Motorcycle Club on property south of town owned by Jerry and Ellen Schafer were not optimum. Recent rains left the ground wet and soft. But that never stops this motorcycle crowd from braving the elements and pitting their skills against natural and man-made elements to finish their races in record times.
Some local riders participated, including Keith strebeck, who finished first in the 15 and under classification on Saturday. Joshua Valverde of Odessa came in eighth. Joshua's dad, Don Valverde, came in 10th in the Vet C class.
Odessa Foods donated a helmet which was won by Greg Rice who placed second in the Super Senior A class.
Only one injury was reported over the weekend of racing. A young lady hurt her wrist but refused medical treatment so she could continue to race.
Some riders fell victim to the saturated ground, which in some cases took some major prying to break the suction, with 15 minutes elapsing before one bike was able to be released from the mud.
Local volunteers Don and Heather Valverde and Don and April Strebeck checked in more than 400 people to race on Saturday. More than 200 finished the course.
On Thursday evening of this week, RVs, tents and campers of all types will begin setting up at the site of the Desert 100 eight miles outside of Odessa on pastureland owned by Wes and Faye King. Under a new ruling by the Stumpjumpers Motorcycle Club, earlier entry to the site is being allowed this year.
The members of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce have been busy preparing for the event by scheduling the staffing of the hospitality tent, ordering supplies and managing all the details that such an undertaking demands.
The weather forecasts for the weekend seem to agree that the rain and wind will be gone by Wednesday, with partly cloudy conditions remaining through Sunday. Saturday's high temperature could reach 60 degrees Fahrenheit, dropping a few degrees on Sunday with the wind picking up a bit to about 15 mph.
A few slots in the hospitality tent still need to be filled, so those interested in performing volunteer work are encouraged to call Lindsy Starkel at school to get on the schedule (982-2111).
