Town Council

Dobson Road to be rebuilt

The town council met August 28 in the public library.

Diana Finkbeiner, representing Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center, requested use of the Old Town Hall for a six-week class on self-management of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, lung disease, chronic pain, etc. The class would meet once each week for three hours each time on one of the same days that senior meals are served.

Council members were hesitant to grant the request for free use of the facility due to the maintenance costs faced by the town for its buildings. The council offered to accept half the normal rate for rental, and Finkbeiner said she would have to talk to her board before making a commitment.

Odessa residents Jim and June Walter also appeared before the council to request that the town write a letter to the primary users of Dobson Road, area potato farmers, to have their heavy trucks use SR 28 out to the Dobson Road exit to access the potato barn located there. The potholes on Dobson, they said, were truly becoming hazardous.

Council members responded with the happy news that Dobson Road has moved to the top of the list of roadways to be rebuilt from the ground up as the result of FEMA funds coming to the area to address damage from the harsh winter conditions when frost heave left many roads in very sad shape.

Mayor Lois Hubbard reported that further research into the issue of the RV dump site located at the cemetery has revealed that the property in question is owned by the Town of Odessa. A copy of the deed has been obtained verifying ownership. The town will work with the Chamber on dealing with the site, which at the very least needs some major cleanup work done.

Public works director Rod Webster informed the council that money must be set aside in the upcoming budget discussions to replace the telemetry equipment used for the sewer system.

There was also a brief discussion of comp time accrued by members of the town crew. No decisions were made and the issue was tabled until the next meeting.
