Vets day dinner honors those who served

Veterans Day was celebrated this past Saturday with a dinner and awards ceremony held in the social hall of Heritage Church. Organized by the local members of VFW Post #7395 and American Legion Post #105, the main dishes of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy were prepared by four Odessa sisters: Pam Williams, Carol Bell, Debbie Walter and Jean Starkel. Side dishes and desserts were provided potluck style by members of the general public. Approximately 80 place settings were arranged, and nearly all of them were filled before the evening was over.

As he has for many years, Legion member Bob Kissler was the emcee for the event, introducing John Hardt, who awarded pins to members for their loyal service, and Lise Ott and JoEllen Wollman, who presented "valor quilts" to long-serving members of the two service organizations.

Ott and Wollman are the owners of Experience Quilts!, Odessa's quilt shop. They have donated their time and materials to making quilts to honor veterans and this year awarded several to local former service members.
