Last week, 12 Odessa students completed the STEM Gems program by presenting their independent research at Eastern Washington University's STEMposium. Sponsored by The Rural Alliance organization, the STEM Gems program allows our science students the freedom to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering or mathematics as they explore postsecondary programs that fit their aspirations and talents.
Our STEM Gems students attended three college visits including Spokane Falls Community College, Spokane Community College, and Eastern Washington University. The college visits brought students together from other rural school districts to view STEM programs, interact with college faculty and industry, and engage in a hands-on labs or projects. The STEM Gems grant covers the costs the students may encounter during their research such as money for supplies, travel costs, cost to attend the college and final presentation day visitations, lunches for the students on those travel days, and the cost of paying a substitute teacher on days that science teacher Jeff Wehr was away.
As an accumulation of their year-long research, the following students shared the findings to the Eastern Washington graduate students, faculty, and other STEM Gems students and educators. They were very well received and the EWU community was impressed with all of the STEM Gems students and research. The Soap Lake school district picked us up and bus-pooled with us to EWU. Danielle Scrupps acted as a chaperone for the entire year.
