To the Editor: Last week, 21 retirees from Olympia spent three days in Odessa. We hiked through the coulees, looked at birds, studied geology, learned about local history, golfed and enjoyed local refreshments. Lake Creek Coulee has some beautiful trails. We saw lots of birds, panoramic vistas and enough rattlesnakes to keep us on our toes. We loved your town and couldn’t have been treated better! The Merry Hikesters are approximately 20 members of a hiking club out of Olympia who spent several days in Odessa last week. These retired educators and government workers had gotten to know a retired geologist named Pat Pringle who was willing to accompany them on their hikes in eastern Washington's channeled scablands. SUPERIOR COURT John F. Strohmaier, Judge Criminal Sentencings Curtis P. Onco III, 45, of Yakima, pleaded guilty May 7 to making or possessing motor vehicle theft tools, amended as a result of a plea agreement with prosecutors from second-degree taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s permission. The Odessa Historical Museum faced a dilemma when the working windmill at the site stopped working. In this digital age, where can you find a windmill repair person? Justin Goetz passed away May 5, 2019 in Odessa. His home was in Odessa. He was born on November 2, 1980 in Odessa to Richard and Peggy (Finkbeiner) Goetz. He grew up in Odessa and graduated in 1999. Lloyd Gary Case passed away peacefully at home on May 3, 2019 at the age of 74. He was born on May 7, 1944 to Lester and Eunice Case in Wapato, Wash. He married his high school sweetheart Nancy Porter in 1968, and they raised her daughter until having two children of their own. Grant County – Health District officials recently investigated a report of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) in a young adult from Grant County. The illness was confirmed by laboratory testing on May 10, 2019 at the state Public Health Laboratory. The individual survived the illness and is continuing to recover at home. The illness began in late April with flu-like symptoms and progressing to respiratory failure requiring a hospital stay. On Wednesday, May 8, 2019, 16 students from four school districts traveled to Odessa High School to close out the 2019 STEM Gems Grant cycle with a presentation finale. Mic Kohlstedt from The Rural Alliance in Spokane is the director of the STEM Gems Grant where the Odessa Science Department was awarded over $5000 to defray the cost of equipment, travel or any expense related to science research and the promotion of rural students conducting independent STEM activities....
