  • This Week in Odessa History

    Updated Sep 1, 2018

1 years ago The Odessa Record Aug. 2, 1918 Few interested in Chautauqua: The attendance at the Radcliffe Chautauqua which has been presenting it's attractions here for the past two days has been very disappointing. When the attraction was booked no date was set and no one here ever thought of it coming right in the midst of harvest, and the lightest one ever experienced in this section and also at a time when everyone is vitally interested in saving every kernel of the...

Summer Reading Program Thursday, July 26, Victoria Rice met the school portion of the Summer Reading Program at the city park while Cindie Rice waited at the library for the local children to arrive. The local children were escorted to the city park. While there, the activity was to tie strings to the top of plastic bottles to make Bull Roars. These are like those used by the aborigines in Australia. The children then enjoyed running in the park before hiking to the library....

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Sep 1, 2018

Medical providers leaving Odessa's two nurse practitioners Rich Ervin and Debbie Fogg have given notice that they intend to leave their positions at Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center later this fall. We've not had an opportunity to speak with either one, but we did contact hospital administrator Mo Sheldon, who had this to say, "We are sorry to say goodbye to Rich and Debbie, and it's unfortunate that their resignations are coming so close together, but it's a hard reality...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

    Laura Estes|Updated Sep 1, 2018

Quilters tend to be good cooks and bakers. Attend any quilting related event that includes a potluck meal and you will come away well sated and with a handful of new recipes. Grape nuts-Oatmeal Cranberry Cookies were among the selections at a Moses Lake event I attended in June. Though I have not tracked down the baker, I did find a so named recipe on line at www.geniuskitchen .com, that is likely the same recipe. These crunchy cookies would be a nice addition to a harvest...

Sheriff's Report INCIDENT LOG Editor’s note: Most items in this section reflect the starting point for response by local police and emergency agencies. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office does not release names of individuals who report possible criminal or suspicious activities to dispatchers or alleged victims for this column. Monday, July 23: A Davenport woman told dispatchers she received a scam call from someone identifying with Medicare who wanted to discuss knee and back braces. A 38-year-old woman sought hospital care...

  • Writer wants team kept together in 13th District

    Updated Sep 1, 2018

To the Editor: I read with interest Ms. Cooks (Davenport Times 7/19) indictment of Matt Manweller, our current 13th District Legislative Representative. Apparently being under investigation is good enough to disparage him. To be more accurate, the investigation is over, but the outcome has not been released. And to suggest he hasn’t been effective on the job for the people of this District, for years, is inaccurate and silly. Matt is a family man, professor of political science and teaches constitutional law. He’s been a GOP...

  • LC fairgrounds study done, proposals made

    Updated Sep 1, 2018

Davenport, WA, July 25, 2018 – Lincoln County recently conducted a highest and best-use study of the 11-acre property that is the county fairgrounds. The goal of the study was to identify opportunities for increasing fairgrounds revenue to a level where the property and facilities could be self-supporting – without disrupting the annual fair. The study, funded in part by a grant from the Washington State Community Economic Revitalization Board, is now complete and under review by commissioners. Elesco, LLC, a consulting firm...

  • Letter to the Editor: Believing in America

    Updated Sep 1, 2018

To the Editor: I am puzzled that some Americans are willing to throw away their freedoms for a dictatorship. I, however, believe in America. In Democracy – American democracy to be exact. I believe in the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and all its Amendments, the Rule of Law. I believe in the Golden Rule, Kindness, Hope, Faith, Charity, Tolerance, Diversity, Goodness, Civility, Compassion, Love, Acceptance, Truth, God. I believe in Family and Friends, Colleagues and Acquaintances, Strangers and P...

  • Land of free has cost

    Updated Sep 1, 2018

I always knew that we had free press, but do we? If we let Trump tell us the press is always lying even when it’s not; is it really free, or are we just trying to tell ourselves that it is? We are also free to assemble, free to choose, or not choose a faith, free to speak up. You really want someone telling you what you can or cannot say, or who you can see? I sure as hell don’t. Some person, like my brother, gave his life for this country of ours, so we could all be free. We used to stand proud of what this country sto...

  • Guard to fight wildfires

    Updated Sep 1, 2018

OLYMPIA – Fire season is stretching state resources thin. To date, the Department of Natural Resources – the state’s largest firefighting force – has responded to 891 fires that have burned 113,000 acres (for context, DNR responded to 853 fires in all of 2017). Wildfires are starting on both sides of the Cascades, with nearly 300 fires in western Washington. Thankfully, using strategies that emphasize quick air attack and positioning equipment in high-risk areas, firefighters have been able to keep 94 percent of fires u...
