  • Harrington news

    Marjorie Womach|Updated Sep 14, 2017

Historical Sketch of Harrington’s Business District in 1899 With Harrington beginning to develop new businesses, it might be interesting to our readers to view the vast number of businesses thriving here more than a hundred years ago. The town had suffered a major fire in 1894 and the affected businesses rebuilt as quickly as supplies were brought to town. One can hope that if a well developed business district is created once again that the community at large would support them. One might take issue with the writer’s est...

She will work with public works director Rod Webster to get it done. HaLee Walter, ag teacher and FFA advisor at Odessa High...

Rosa Marie "Rosie" Michaelsen was born in Odessa Sept. 29, 1918. She was the fifth of seven daughters born to Conrad and Anna Margaret Schauerman. Her father Con was a brick layer and contractor, building Odessa's wooden grain bins and homes (to include Rosie and Heinie's). Many still remain. Her parents were among the early families of immigrants, Germans from Russia. Only 14 when her mother died during the Great Depression, Rosie worked part time after school at Derr's...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

    Updated Sep 14, 2017

Last week The Odessa Record included a Deutschesfest insert. In the insert on page 3 is a stock recipe for Apple Strudel. Please Do Not use that recipe. Reason one, amounts in metric or US are incorrect. At best, you will end up with goop suitable for hanging wallpaper. Reason two, this is not the style of strudel served during Fest, as it is a rolled rather than stretched dough. The filling ingredients listed are typical of an Austrian style strudel. Most Germans from Russia Odessa area settlers made strudel with a...

  • Letter to the Editor: Non English-speaking immigrants cost more

    Updated Sep 14, 2017

To the Editor: After the twin towers fell, Bin Laden said that his goal was to bankrupt America. I would assume that he would be proud, as would his followers. Our debt that we recognize is twenty trillion and climbing because we keep making mistakes that would please his followers. We keep foolishly allowing immigrants in to our country who don’t speak English. This gives us the added expense of having five million school-aged children who must be taught English in our classrooms. That takes valuable teacher time! We must p...

  • 47th Deutschesfest ready to welcome visitors

    Terrie Schmidt-Crosby|Updated Sep 14, 2017

Welcome to Odessa and the Odessa Deutschesfest. This is our town’s moment to shine and to show our hospitality to the many guests who visit us. The festival began in 1971 and is now celebrating its 47th year. New generations take over the tasks associated with it from their parents and grandparents. This year especially, a cadre of younger residents and former residents have joined forces to give the festival some updates and new life. So what’s new this year, some of you are likely to ask. One of the biggest changes will occ...

  • Correction

    Updated Sep 14, 2017

In last week's Deutschesfest supplement to The Record, we spelled the name of Biergarten chair Tami Smith incorrectly. She is also serving this year for the third time, not the second, and her co-chair (not vice chair) in Lindsy Starkel. Also problematical in the supplement, Laura Estes reports in her Welcome to My Kitchen column (see page 3), is the apple strudel recipe we ran. She graciously sent us the recipe used by the Odessa Christ Lutheran Church for those of our readers who might like to try making it at...
