1930-2017

Doris Mae (Geier) Looney, age 86, of Spokane Valley, with family at her side, made the journey to heaven on Sunday, May 28, 2017, from Sacred Heart – Providence Medical Center in Spokane following a sudden and brief illness.

Dorie was born September 17, 1930 in Colfax to Conrad and Mae (Scheuerman) Geier. She attended school in Endicott, earning her diploma in 1948. In 1951, she married Donnell D. (Don) Looney of Dusty at Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott – the start of a loving, 58-year marriage. In 1953, following Don's army service, the couple built a home in Endicott where they were involved with wheat farming, with the community and their families and with Trinity. In 1957, Dorie and Don purchased their own wheat and cattle operation in the Harrington-Odessa area, where they thrived in the new community and church, Christ Lutheran in Odessa. In 1974, they received a prodigious offer on the farm. Dorie and Don built a home in Spokane Valley and were delighted to be closer to immediate family. In 1980, Dorie completed the medical transcription program at Spokane Community College and worked for Deaconess Hospital in Spokane until 1993. In 1994, the retired couple returned to the town of Odessa, where they spent the happiest years of their lives on home improvements, with extended visits from grandchildren and relatives and with their dearest friends. Soon after Don's passing in 2009, Dorie moved to a beautiful home in Spokane Valley where she enjoyed her flower garden, reading, cooking, devotionals, visiting with neighbors, the grandchildren's music and sporting events and her little dog, Baxter.

Dorie is survived by son Russell; grandsons Conrad and Russell, Jr. of Spokane Valley; her sister Mary Ellen (Geier) Poffenroth of Spokane Valley; sisters-in-law Carol (Looney) Davin of Walla Walla; Leslie Jane (Looney) Largent of Colfax and Toni Poffenroth of Spokane. She was blessed with wonderful nieces and nephews from the Davin, Geier, Looney, Morasch, Poffenroth, Scheuerman and Smith families, all of whom were very dear to her. She is preceded in death by her husband; mother and father; brothers Carl, Otto, Elmer, Willy and Harold Poffenroth; brothers Earnest and Wallace Geier; sisters Eva Geier, Clara (Poffenroth) Morasch, Alice Poffenroth, Caroline (Poffenroth) Smith and Violet Poffenroth and brother-in-law Merlin Looney. We salute her cherished lifelong friends Al and Janet Fink of Odessa and Donnie and Alene Lust of Endicott and Spokane and their sons and daughters.

The family wishes to convey our gratitude to the staff of Sacred Heart Hospital, especially to the nurses and care givers. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to any or all of the organizations close to Dorie's heart: Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott, Christ Lutheran Church in Odessa or the Providence Healthcare Foundation – Palliative Care, 101 W. 8th Ave., Spokane, WA 99204.

Interment will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2017 at Endicott Cemetery, followed by a memorial service and luncheon starting at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 219 4th St., in Endicott.
