School enrollment up; good start to 2017-18 academic year

The Board of Directors of Odessa School District #105 met in the high school library Wednesday, September 20. Present were Ed Deife, Heather Valverde, Chris Crossley, Janie Steward, Carmen Weishaar, superintendent Dan Read, principal Jamie Nelson and business manager Juli Weishaar. Also present were Justin Parr, Larry Weber, Dalles Deife and Bruce Todd.

There was no staff or public input.

The board approved the consent agenda which included minutes of the August 22 regular meeting, September bills and payroll warrants #610238-610261 and direct deposit warrants #900005712-900005768 for $260,884.81, general fund A/P warrants #610262-610316 for $145,048.90, capital projects fund A/P warrant #610317 for $19,062.00, ASB fund A/P warrants #610318-610340 for $18,908.17, a general fund comp tax wire for $998.26 and an ASB fund comp tax wire for $133.65.


Also approved were Julie Wehr as director of the school musical and Kelly Weber as a volunteer athletic trainer.

Superintendent's report

Read reported a September enrollment of 234.9 full-time-equivalent students.

He also reported that in the wake of the tragic Freeman school shooting, the administration is reviewing the district's lock-down policies and procedures.

Read is seeking a volunteer board member to serve on the committee that will be reviewing the district's athletic/activity code. Additional members will include parents, coaches and student athletes/activity participants.

Principal's report

Principal Nelson reported that the first-day-of-school assembly kicked off this year's theme of "Be Someone's Hero." In conjunction with the hero theme, elementary Tiger Pride winners will now be having lunch with a hero each month instead of the principal.


Nelson commended new kindergarten teacher Megan Walter on the work she has done to acclimate her students to the daily school routine. She also commended all the students and staff who worked various shifts during Deutchesfest and also thanked Maria Manley for painting artwork on the concession stand.

Nelson concluded by announcing that homecoming week will be October 1-7 with the addition of the October 24 volleyball game.

Board report

Heather Valverde commented on how well the cheerleaders performed at the first home football game. Other board members who attended the game were in agreement and complimented the squad on a job well done.

Athletic director's report

Bruce Todd reported he had recently attended both a 1B/2B AD meeting and a District 7 AD meeting.

Todd reported both the high school football and volleyball teams are off to a great start with records of 2 - 0.

The athletic director has not received an application for either the high school asst. girls basketball or the junior-high asst. baseball coaching positions. Both positions remain open.

Todd concluded by reporting that the State 1B volleyball tournament in the Yakima Sun Dome has been moved up a day to Thursday and Friday, November 9 and 10.

Facilities report

Justin Parr reported there was a minor leak in the commons following the recent rainfall. There were no leaks in the business lab which indicates the roof repairs worked. Handrails at the elementary entrance and on the steps leading up to the gym entrance will be installed in the coming week.

Parr presented an updated quote, in the amount of $4,200, for replacing the acrylic Titan sign with Tigers on the reader board downtown.

Parr concluded by reporting the first fire drill of the year had taken place utilizing the upgraded high school fire alarm system and everything went well.

Financial report

Superintendent Read presented the ASB balance sheet for August, plus the financial activity reports for the general fund for August showing revenue at $371,788 and expenditures at $278,501 for an ending balance of $969,726.

Next regular meeting

The next regular board meeting will be held Wednesday, October 25, at 6 p.m. in the high school library. The board scheduled a workshop at 5:30 p.m. before the regular meeting.

Minimum basic ed requirement compliance

Read reported that the district is in compliance with the number of hours of educational offerings and graduation requirements as required by the State Board of Education.

Town of Odessa

rezoning request

Read presented a request, from the board of directors to the Town of Odessa to rezone the property recently purchased by the district located at 202 E. 4th Avenue. The request is to have the property put under the same classification as other school district properties within the Town of Odessa's city limits. The new classification will be more conducive to actual operations of the school district.

The board approved Read's filing the request and an application with the city clerk to be placed on the next city council meeting agenda.

Policy #2337 – Disability History Month

In response to a public records request, Read presented Policy #2337 – Disability History Month for first and second reading by the board, which they approved.

Collective Bargaining

Agreement

Read presented the three-year Public School Employees Collective Bargaining Agreement for board approval. Negotiated items included a 2.3% pay increase for all classified staff, an increase in standby bus driver wages from $11 per hour to $13.50 per hour, an increase in substitute paraprofessional, food service and custodial/maintenance wages to $11.50 per hour and an increase of an additional $0.35 per hour for paraeducators who serve 70 percent of their day serving special education students.

The board gave its unanimous approval.

Booster Club Donation

The board approved a motion to accept a $1,250 donation from the Booster Club to the ASB for football helmets.

There was no executive session.
