On Thursday, May 31, an award ceremony took place on the outdoor stage in downtown Odessa following receipt of the $10,000 check won by the local high school chapter of FBLA in the Lead2Feed program, as reported by The Record on May 24. At the time, we reported that the funds would be going to the Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center, a logical assumption given that the FBLA chapter had partnered with the Odessa Healthcare Foundation to assist Odessa senior citizens by providing freezer meals, exercise classes, game nights.
A meeting between the two organizations, however, resulted in a desire to keep the existing programs in place and build upon them. The only problem was that the Old Town Hall, where most of the activities for seniors took place, was desperately in need of a roof repair. So the decision was made to donate $9,000 to the Old Town Hall Rejuvenation Society's roof fund. FBLA would retain $1,000 in seed money for projects to assist the seniors beginning next fall.
The FBLA students on the outdoor stage showed the video they had created to explain their project and its successes. Several different students introduced various parts of their projects before an appreciative audience of fellow students, invited senior citizens and members of the general public. Once the check was awarded, the students treated their guests to cake.
