HOHS

The Harrington Opera House Society met in the Art Room for its monthly meeting on April 1. Present were Ellen Evans, Becky Moeller, Sheryl and Mark Stedman, Billie and Gordon Herron, Ed and Bunny Haugan, Marge Womach, Carol, and Karen Robertson. A total of 201 newsletters were mailed out with an 11 percent success rate for response, which is considered very positive. After some discussion, a motion by B. Herron and second by B. Haugan passed that no official business be conducted online, with all in favor except for one abstention.

The Building Committee is tackling projects again this season. G. Herron is working on getting the furnace reimbursement for the lobby furnace, which will be a rebate from Avista. He also received a bid for the furnace for the Rummage Room, which was voted upon to accept. Herron will order it, locate the register placements and prepare for their installation.

Carol discussed the heat tape which prevents ice build up in the roof drains. No damage to the building was noticed and heat tapes have been turned off. The sensors for the piano and the basement needed to have the Smart Hub replaced with Acurite’s Access, their updated model. The replacement was installed last week. The system is back online. Handrails on the old back stairs were completed.

Other old business included stating that the Chamber map is being worked on. A Ritzville business has been contacted regarding the projector/computer laptop and provided a package deal for a refurbished Intel laptop with projector and complete cabling included for under $1,000. The purchase was approved. The rummage area is open for donations for the May rummage fund-raiser, and an effort is being made to be there on Tuesdays and Thursdays to receive items and be open for “Community” days on April 13 and 27.

A full-page insert for the Chamber Newsletter needs to be done, as well as the poster for Cruizin’ Harrington. Another poster was proposed to show how the generous donations are benefiting the Opera House.

The Society’s event schedule begins with the April 27 Carolyn Cruso performance, which may be preceded by a dulcimer jam session in the afternoon. Robertson requested help with set-up at 5 p.m. On May 1, the Society will serve the Lion’s Club dinner. May 18 will be the quilt show in the auditorium, and the rummage sale will be May 17 and 18. “Folkin’, Rockin’, Country,” a Bob Dylan and Patsy Cline Tribute by Paul “Buck” and Elizabeth Stierle, is scheduled for June 1. October 5 brings the return of the Fiddlers. Other potentials were discussed with no dates established.

Chamber of Commerce

The Harrington area Chamber of Commerce met April 3 at The Post and Office with Tim Tipton, Paula Harrington, Billie Herron, Heather Slack, Jay Gossett, Cade Clarke, Trudy Waggoner, Chris Paxton, Cherie MacClellan, Karen Robertson, Richard Danskey (new resident), Amber Zagelow (Katz realtor) and Val Mohney (Huckleberry Press) attending.

Updates on Cruizin’ Harrington filled the meeting. It was announced that at present there are 15 vendors signed up indicating a wide variety of items that will be available for sale. Vendor spaces will be assigned this year to separate similar products. Spaces are yet available by contacting HarringtonWAVendors@gmail.com .

Definite portions of the program at the Opera House will be the quilt show in the auditorium and the fundraiser in the Rummage Room on Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18.

The Electric Hotel will have tours with the Outlaw Woman on scene. Rodney Aho will perform live music as will the Hawk Creek Acoustic Duo.

For the work at the Studebaker Garage, there is an expressed desire for more volunteers to help park the show cars. Contact Jill Plaskon or Jay Gossett. It was announced that they will hold a raffle again this year and will be one of several food vendors. The Chamber will operate a Beer Garden again this year in the empty lot across from the Studebaker Garage on Third St. The Athletic Booster Club will serve breakfast of biscuits and gravy from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Memorial Hall. A list of the day’s events and activities is being created and will be available.

Nominations for “Yard of the Month” for May through October will be taken by the Chamber, where final selections are made. If you would like to nominate a yard, please contact Tim Tipton.

The Harrington Golf and Country Club will make available discount tickets for May 18. Sunday, May 19, will be a “Free Greens Fee Day”.

Val Mohney spoke of the need for more people to be involved in submitting articles, student of the month, historical stories, school stories and other items for the Harrington Happenings page in the bi-weekly Huckleberry Press free paper. At this point, only a couple of people are supplying the information and help is needed to keep it successful. Please email items to Val@huckleberrypress.com.

Tipton has worked with Fly Fabrication for a solar-powered light for the Harrington Amenities sign by the Cenex station on the north side of town. The Chamber voted to accept the quote and have the light system installed.

The Harrington United Methodist Church will hold the baccalaureate ceremony May 26 at 5 p.m. for Harrington’s 2019 graduates.

The deadline for submitting full-page ads for the Chamber mailer is April 26. Half-page ads will not be utilized. Assembly will take place May 1 after the Chamber meeting.
