Alums celebrate with former coach

Odessa alum Nancy (Melcher) Zacher submitted a photo taken at the OHS reunion banquet in June, depicting special guest Craig Johnson with five members of the 1968-69 third-place basketball team who were on hand for their 50-year reunion.

She relates that, "Craig Johnson came to Odessa in the fall of 1968. He taught biology, zoology and physics and coached the high school boys' basketball team. He was fresh out of college, newly married and excited to have his first teaching job. His wife Carol was also hired to teach fifth grade. Craig Johnson graduated from Shadle Park High School in Spokane and spent his college years at the Universities of Idaho and Alaska.

"CJ, as he is also known, said that teaching in Odessa was one of the most memorable assignments of his career. He led the basketball team to the State B Tournament in Spokane where Odessa took home the third-place trophy in March of 1969.

"The 2018-19 team came close to breaking this record by placing fourth in the state 1B tournament this year, but third place still rules after 50 years."
