July 4 firemen's barbecue feeds nearly 300

The firemen's barbecue last week on July 4 at Reiman Park in Odessa was very well attended. Rural fire chief Roger Sebesta kept a tally of the meals purchased as approximately 270 people filed past his cash drawer and on through the serving line. Firemen and their family members prepared pulled pork earlier in the week along with side dishes of homemade baked beans and potato salad. Dill pickles, assorted varieties of chips, watermelon slices and bottled water rounded out the lunch-time meal served by the firefighters and their family members.

Tables and benches borrowed from the community center were set up by the firemen mostly in the shade of the park's trees. The pool was also open, so swimming was available to anyone who wanted to work off their lunch or just to cool off.

Following the barbecue and the cleanup in its aftermath, the afternoon was relatively quiet, at least until dark when the legal and illegal fireworks came out and utterly destroyed the peace and quiet. It was, without a doubt, a very loud July 4.
