ODESSA — The Odessa High School Alumni Association has canceled this year’s June 20 alumni reunion dinner due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

Letters to alumni will be sent out early in May informing them of the cancelation and explaining that the 2021 reunion will double up on the honored classes so that both the 2020 and 2021 honorees will receive their due recognition, officials said.

The Odessa Athletics Hall of Fame committee, however, has opted to go ahead with plans to honor this year’s inductees.

As it has for the past four years, the committee has been meeting this spring to select inductees to be honored at the fifth annual induction ceremony.

Since the alumni banquet has been canceled, the Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony will take place in the Odessa High School gymnasium at 5 p.m. June 20.

A small and short program will hosted by the committee in the gymnasium to honor this year’s inductees, to present their plaques, view the Hall of Fame board in the foyer and take pictures.

The Odessa Record will cover the event and take pictures.

The public is invited to attend, and committee spokesman Jon Heimbigner says that whatever health-related policies in effect as of that date will be followed.

This year, the committee selected nine individuals and two teams to be honored, and their names, photos and bios will be added to the display case.

The Odessa Record will publish the names of the newest inductees in May when it produces the commemorative booklet with pictures and bios of all this year’s inductees.

Committee Chairman Larry Weber and Vice Chairman Jon Heimbigner encourage the public to contact committee members (11) with suggested nominees and especially with information about anyone from the earliest years of Odessa High School athletics.

To nominate an athlete, call Heimbigner at 509-701-5741 (cellphone) or Weber at the high school at 509-982-2111.

The committee is also looking for financial assistance to defray the cost of plaques and displays.
