Davenport Lions Club marks successful year

DAVENPORT — Despite the coronavirus and its effects, the Davenport Lions Club had another successful year.

The club had to cancel the annual Easter Egg Hunt and breakfast, the Lions Club Surf and Turf dinner and its board and regular meetings.

While honoring the social distancing request, some information and issues were discussed via e-mail and messenger. It was sufficient enough for the end of the Lions year.

Meetings will resume after the social distancing request has been lifted.

It is most difficult for our members to step back from activities and projects when they are used to being active. Projects that were planned for this past year were the building of the BBQ shelter at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds and handicap parking at the Memorial Hall.

The BBQ shelter is near completion and the handicap parking was put on hold until social distancing is over.

The club will continue with its calendar sales, although the process and procedures may be different.

We will also continue planning for Pioneer days.

Normally, the club would have assisted in the community cleanup and highway litter pickup which were canceled or postponed.

Under the leadership of Lion President Jeff Barkdull, the club gained six new members while losing three that either moved or passed.

Turkey Bingo was a tremendously successful fundraiser. It provides funds for projects such as the Bell Tower, BBQ shelter, handicap parking, scholarships, the Christmas fund, FFA and 4 H groups through the Livestock booster club, Peace Poster Program and Boys Scouts — although the local Boys Scout program has been suspended due to lack of membership.

Other services provided under the Lions Club program is hearing and vision issues as well as diabetes education.

The club continues to be active to the point of what is allowed and look forward to the coming year.

The club is always inviting new members to be a part of the organization.

You can contact any club member for futher information.
