Earl Joseph Meise

Earl Joseph Meise, 97 of Odessa, Wash., passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 27, 2020 in Odessa.

Earl was born April 28, 1923, in Quincy, Ill., to Fred and Alvina Meise. Earl attended high school in Washtucna and graduated in 1943. He married Ramona Jean Burghard on November 2, 1946. The couple celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary in November 2019.

Earl enlisted in the United States Navy in November 1946. He did his basic training in San Diego, California and returned to Whidbey Island, Washington where he was stationed. Earl moved to Ritzville, Washington after the service, where sons Charles Earl, and Martin Frederick were born. His only daughter Kristi Lynn was later born in Odessa, Washington.

He worked for Suchland Auto when the family permanently moved Odessa, Washington. Earl was most well-known for his job as a John Deere parts man where he developed bonds with so many people along the way, and where he got his nickname, Squirrely Early. He retired from the Grange in 1985.

After retirement he joined Ramona as a van driver for People for People. Earl was a member of the Odessa Fire Department and active member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church. Earl enjoyed hobbies such as hunting and fishing. In his later years, Earl or as most of us referred to him as, G-pa, enjoyed gardening, woodworking, making bird houses and Barbie houses for his granddaughters. G-pa and G-ma enjoyed going to the casino, (Two Rivers was his favorite), he would win and count hundred dollar bills with a smirk on his face.

G-pa's favorite thing to do was to attend his grandkids football, baseball, softball, basketball, and volleyball games, he didn't miss any of them that I can recall. Earl was always good for a joke or one liners, he would tell us kids we were too gosh darn ettle little.

Earl is preceded in death by his wife Ramona, brothers Donald Meise, Fred Meise Junior (Butch), Tom Meise, and sister Margaret Johnson and grandson Joel Finck. He is survived by his sisters Alvira Zeller and Sharlene Ling Sullivan, his son's Charles Meise, Martin (Wendy) Meise, daughter Kristi (Gary) Finck, grandchildren Lance Meise, Brandon (Kayla) Meise, Shannon (Jon) Hodge, Jena Meise, as well as great grandchildren Tyler and Jaden Meise, Mya and Ruger Meise, and Alexis and Drake Hodge.

A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Odessa, WA with father Rory Pitstick, officiating. Interment to follow at the Odessa Cemetery, Odessa, WA. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at http://www.strate-funeral.com for the Meise family.
