Delbert Cook

Delbert Cook, 94, passed away Dec. 21, 2020 in Odessa, Wash.

Delbert was born March 30, 1926, to Alex and Mary Cook on a farm near Irby, WA. He went to school in Odessa, WA.

After graduating from Odessa High School, he worked on the family farm before joining the Coast Guard and shortly thereafter joining the US Navy in 1945. He was discharged from the service in 1947. Returning to Odessa after the war, he met the love of his life Delores Schorzman. They were the second couple ever to be married in the United Congregational Church in 1949. They were married for 70 years.

Delbert worked as a masonry contractor and general contractor in the Odessa area for many years. Examples of his masonry work in Odessa and surrounding communities are numerous especially the brick pillars at the Odessa Cemetery. He and his wife owned and operated the Odessa Lumber Company. Delbert and Delores were founding members of the Cannawai Harvesters Band playing at many events in the area and were one of the first bands to play at the Odessa Deutchesfest.


In 1948 Delbert became a charter member at the Marlin Gun Club and was active in remodeling and updating the clubhouse over the years. In 2007, he was honored with a special competition shoot recognizing all of his support for the club. He was a member of the National Grange for over 50 years. He was also an active member of the VFW for over 70 years being honored with a special quilt in 2017. He was an avid bird hunter, fisherman, golfer and trap shooter.


Delbert was in the Odessa Memorial Hospital Care Center for over 5 years where although sometimes feisty, became endeared to the staff.

He was a patriotic citizen who contributed to his community and was always there for his family, friends and community.

Delbert is preceded in death by his wife Delores (Schorzman) Cook, brother Lavene Cook, and sister Frances Weishaar. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and will be missed by all.

Graveside and inurnment services will be held in the spring of 2021 at the Odessa Cemetery. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at http://www.stratefuneralhome.com for the family members. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Odessa VFW (Odessa PO box 332).
