January snowfall much lower than average

DAVENPORT – After several winter storms created higher than average snowfall totals in October, November and December, the “white stuff” held off for the majority of January during what was forecasted as a “La Nina” winter.

Just 2.0 inches of snow fell in the first month of 2021, according to the National Weather Service data center in Spokane, which tallies weather results for Davenport. Normally, 8.1 inches of snow fall in January here. Snow was recorded on only four days of January, and all but one day, it snowed less than an inch.

Snowstorms at the end of December drove the total for the month above normal. The “norm” for December is 10.1 inches total, but on Dec. 30 and 31, it snowed a combined 10 inches. The total for the month was 16.6 inches.

Meanwhile, in November, it snowed 8.2 inches, three above the 5.2 normal. 4.2 inches of snow on Nov. 13 largely contributed to the above-average total. A rare October snowstorm on the 26th of 3.2 inches caused the monthly total to balloon above the average of 0.2 inches, though that was the only day it snowed that month.

February is forecasted to have more precipitation and lower temperatures than normal, but whether that leads to more snow is dependent on whether those two factors coincide on the same days or occur separately.
