Reardan baseball allows one run in two games against Kettle Falls

REARDAN – If not for the difference in throwing arms, Kettle Falls hitters might have thought they were facing the same pitcher twice in a row. Southpaw Aiden Kieffer and righty Caden Day both recorded complete games to lead the Indians to a doubleheader sweep over the Bulldogs 6-1 and 1-0 Tuesday, May 4.

Reardan improved to 3-7 with the pair of wins, snapping a six-game skid. Kettle Falls fell to 1-9.

In the first game, Reardan jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kieffer helped himself out with leadoff double and was scored by Tait Nelson. Day knocked in Nelson with an RBI single and crossed home on a passed ball. Abe Nelson then scored on a sacrifice fly by Noah Meyer.

Reardan added runs in the bottom of the second and sixth innings. Tait Nelson and Dylan Finch contributed RBI's.

Kieffer, meanwhile, dusted off Bulldogs without much trouble, allowing just three hits and pitching a shutout until the top of the seventh inning, when Kettle Falls scored their lone run of the doubleheader.

"Aiden Kieffer was at his best on the mound throwing a complete game," Reardan head coach Matt Clouse said. "(And) other than some lapses in the sixth (inning), we played well defensively."

Reardan finished the first game with nine hits and committed two errors.

The second game proved to be a pitcher's duel, as Day and Kettle Falls' Boomer Prouty shut down hitters left and right. Day proved slightly more effective, striking out 14 batters and allowing just two hits with no walks, while his back seven helped him out in the field.

"He was in the zone all day," Clouse said. "Our defense made plays in the field when we needed them."

Reardan finally got to Prouty in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tait Nelson knocked in Kieffer with a clutch two-out single for the game's only run. Kieffer scored from second after walking and stealing a base. Reardan only managed four hits for the game, but the one run proved enough to come out victorious.

The Indians and Bulldogs are right back at it Thursday, May 6, this time in Kettle Falls. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at Fox Field.
