School Board hears department presentations

DAVENPORT – Seven department heads or representatives gave updates and shared goals/requests at the School Board’s quarterly meeting Monday, May 17.

The presentations followed the approval of the consent agenda, which included hiring Morgan Hunt and Kyra Arland as elementary teachers, Tracy Winzer as secondary ELA, Jennifer Hargrave as ALE/Options Program teacher/director and Tim Zeiler as junior high boys basketball head coach.

Sarah Sweetser gave a food services presentation and described how food service workers have transitioned from doing food delivery to bagged lunches to hot meals and breakfast as schools have closed and slowly re-opened. She said the staff is simply hoping for a return to normalcy.

Alison Hawley and Heather Jacoby gave a counseling and GearUp presentation, sharing about virtual college and career visits students have been able to participate in and virtual open office hours the counselors have had.

They said they hope to expand their team, bring back more in-person activities and hear more student voices.

Tyson Linstrum gave a special education presentation and shared that all six seniors in the program are on track to graduate. He said a recent change to his position and the hiring of Lindsey Wynecoop as a special education teacher will help.

Jamie Manchester and Matt Feider gave a technology update, noting the transition just before the COVID-19 pandemic of getting Chromebooks to every student and the importance of cybersecurity and protecting the students and staff from malicious cyberactivity.

Bill Ball talked about transportation and said the biggest issue has been getting students and parents to comply with the requirement to wear masks on buses.

He said he wants students to see the motive is to protect the bus drivers from the disease. He also said he hopes to recruit more bus drivers, as the department is already stretched thin and retirements could be looming in the next couple years.

Noelle Carstens and Leslie Oliver gave brief updates about career and technical education and the business management department. Both said the programs were going well and adapted during the pandemic.

The School Board will meet in regular session at 6 p.m. May 24.
