ODESSA – The 50th anniversary of the Odessa Deutschesfest finally became a reality last week. Not even the rain sprinkles that fell sporadically all day Saturday could put a damper on the crowds who devoured much of the food available and visited various vendors at the Street Fair, in addition to participating in the various activities of the Fest. On Thursday evening things got off to a good start with the chalk-drawing contest. The contest's former sponsor declined to participate this year, so HaLee Walter and friends decided to put it on themselves. It was held on the sidewalk in front of the empty lot between Wheatland Bank and a building owned by former Odessa mayor Doug Plinski.

Chalk-Drawing Contest

The winners of the chalk-drawing contest are Ava Scrupps, Grant Wagner, Drayson Walter, Aubrey Iverson, Katie Mae Shelton, Simon King, Asher Kagele and Hesston Stanford in various age categories.

Tricycle Races

The trike races had four heats for different age groups.

0-3 years: Russell Wilson, first; Ezra King second.

In the 6-7 and 8-10 age groups, only one winner was awarded a larger prize.

6-7 years: Harley Ryan, first.

8-10 years: Simon King, first.

Each child who participated also got a small consolation gift.

Parade

The Kiddie Parade was the smallest ever. JoElle Russell smiled and waved throughout the parade route, a brave little girl, who was the sole entrant and who dressed up as an Oompa Loompa from the story of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. She is the granddaughter of Marilyn and Phil Heninger of Odessa.

The color guard leading the Fest parade was made up of American Legion/VFW members Ryan Scrupps, Tony Quilici, Danny Quilici and Gerald (Seth) Smith. Announcers for the parade were Clark Kagele and Charles Kissler. Travis Shaw sang the Star-Spangled Banner.

Other notables in the parade were Odessa Mayor Bill Crossley, Biergarten chairpersons Kory Kolterman and Shelby Smith Whitman, parade Grand Marshals Roger and Phyllis Sebesta, Chamber of Commerce President Norman Ott, Senator Judy Warnick and Representative Tom Dent of the 13th Legislative District of Washington, Lincoln County Sheriff Wade Magers, .

Three floats graced the parade. The Spokane Lilac Festival float and its contingent of royalty were on hand, as was the Davenport float featuring Queen Adria Marlo Crandall and the Deer Park community float. Odessa had no float this year, but the Odessa Jr.-Sr. High School marching band led by Sam Harder looked sharp.
