DAVENPORT-Jenna Abernathy, a seventh-grade student at Davenport Middle School and daughter of Alden and Joy Abernathy, has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the Davenport Lions Club.

Abernathy's poster was among more than 600,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 34th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Club International is sponsoring the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.

Her poster was selected for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, "We Are All Connected".

"To me peace means less fighting and more help and kindness between countries and people," Abernathy said.

Davenport Lions Club President Scott Hopkins said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students.

"It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I'm so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions," Hopkins said. "I would like to thank art teacher Stacy Graham for all the time and effort she put in administering the contest."

"Jenna's poster will advance to face stiff competition through the district, multiple district and international rounds of competition," Hopkins said. "Our club is cheering for Jenna as her poster advances in the competition and we hope that her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world."

The second-place winner was Brooke Halme and third place winner was Tanner Zaugg.
