Scenes from the train derailment in Davenport

DAVENPORT--A train transporting grain through town derailed around 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 behind the grain elevators between Third and Fourth Streets. The derailment caused Highway 28 to be closed in both directions for about 2.5 hours before re-opening when Kyle Mattox used his tractor to move train cars blocking the highway.

Eight cars were still off the tracks Saturday morning. Some were completely turned over, with others slightly off the track. Some tracks just west of Fourth Street have been torn up.

Highline Grain Growers crews were working to clear the copious amounts of spilled grain, a process they say will likely take until Tuesday or Wednesday. Then, a crane-like machine will be used to steadily lift the train cars back onto the track.

No one was injured in the crash. A cause is still being determined.
