HARRINGTON – The Opera House Society met Jan 10 at 7 p.m. for its regular monthly meeting, which was called to order by new president Carol Giles. Present at the meeting held at Memorial Hall were Billie and Gordon Herron, Mark and Sheryl Stedman, Karen Robertson, Juanita Lee, Linda Wagner, Ellen Evans, Becky Moeller and guest Paula Harrington, president of the Chamber of Commerce. Moeller gave the treasurer's report and financial statements which were all approved. HOHS voted to renew its membership with the Chamber of Commerce.

The building committee shared its list of projects which included the purchase of doors for the rummage room, cleaning clutter from the Art Room restroom to continue working there, repairs on a roll top desk and bank vault, accepting bids for potential construction on the Willis Street wall and wood for the pew cushions.

Potential events were discussed, including a possible performance by Old Time Fiddlers in May and interest shown by the Columbia Basin Allied Arts in Moses Lake. HOHS is hoping to pursue a variety of events as coronavirus issues resolve. Mention was made that HOHS is hosting a quilt show during the Studebaker Car Show on May 22. Paula Harrington said the Country Fair is scheduled for the weekend of June 17-18 and would like to use the Opera House for a quilt show both days. Positive feedback was given. The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 p.m.

After School Program

Harrington Public Library's "After School Program" met Thursday, Jan. 20 afternoon at the Memorial Hall with Kris Moritz leading. She was pleased that at least six students braved the inclement weather and had a great time.

Adults aiding in the session included Bonnie Clarke, Michelle Maloney-Kostyk, Elizabeth Wolfe and Evie Mann.

One of the activities was decorating wooden pieces with marbled crayons on paper for the children to take home for Valentine's Day.

While Moritz was preparing the snack, the children on their own began shuffling chairs and invented their own game. She had their attention with the homemade Smores, and hot chocolate was prepared and served.

The group used some of their pent-up energy practicing their line dance, "the Cupid Shuffle.”

Moritz read several chapters to the children from the "Legend of Robin Hood" during which time the children were quiet and attentive. The next session will be Feb 17. Plans are to continue this program through May.
