Free student meals conclude with school year

ODESSA- Superintendent Dan Read informed the board that the free meals for all students will conclude at the end of this school year at the board’s meeting Wednesday, April 27.

Students who are eligible for free or reduced meals will still be able to participate in the programs during the 2022-23 school year and going forward.

Read also provided information on potential heating upgrades which he hopes will be funded through ESSER III funds. Quotes and bids will be reviewed at the May board meeting as well as timelines for the project.

Read reported a recent student count of 213.

Principal Jamie Nelson reported a PreK-12 enrollment headcount of 240 students.

The Smarter Balance State Assessments are underway.

Nelson thanked Kimberly Ryan for all her hard work creating a testing schedule.

Grades 5-12 performed their spring concert on April 18.

The elementary school will have its concert on April 29.

The junior high and high school band will be marching in the Lilac Parade on May 21.They will also be performing at Silverwood on June 6.

FBLA State competitions were held last week in Spokane with 10 teams moving on to nationals in Chicago this summer.

Odessa received the Outstanding Chapter of the Year Award and Jamie Nelson received the FBLA Administrator of the year Award.

FFA will be attending the state convention on May 11-14 in the Tri-Cities and Pullman on May 30- June 1.

The annual plant sale will be on April 30 at the Ag Shop Greenhouse.

The senior trip to Triple Play is scheduled for May 5.

The senior recognition assembly and walk will be on June 1.

Graduation is scheduled for June 4 in the gymnasium.

Nelson shared that kindergarten teacher interviews were held and Sidney Sheer has been selected pending board approval. The board unanimously voted to hire Sheer.

Chris Crossley shared how great the baseball and softball fields looked thanks to the Odessa Booster Club and the women's softball team.

Jamie Nelson was congratulated on receiving the FBLA Administrator award.

The last junior high school meet was at Valley Christian on April 27.

Todd also said that the high school baseball team will play Springdale on April 30.

Zoe Clark will be the new high school assistant volleyball coach and Paul Horak will be the junior high assistant football coach pending board approval. The board unanimously voted to approve the hiring of Horak and Clark.

Read reported on behalf of Justin Parr that a few minor repairs will be completed soon for the upgrade to the heating control system project.

The grounds have been fertilized and Parr is waiting on a quote for the bathroom/concession roofing and electric project.

The next meeting will be held May 25 at 6 p.m.
