Dewey, Curry to play in college

Both girls sign with state community colleges

REARDAN-Two more senior high school students from here will play basketball in college. Mady Dewey signed with the Community Colleges of Spokane this week, while Ella Curry signed with Everett Community College last Thursday.

Both signings followed Ayden Krupke signing with Bushnell College, making it three girls' basketball players from the 2021-22 roster heading to the next level.

Both CCS and ECC are in the Northwest Athletic Conference and usually play each other once or twice a season, so the former teammates can expect to face off throughout their collegiate careers.

Curry said ECC found her through a recruiting app. After two visits to the campus, which included taking in a Trojans game, she was hooked.

"I looked at a lot of different places, but that just felt like the right one," Curry said. "The coach was super inviting and understood if I didn't pick Everett."

Dewey has had her eye on becoming a Sasquatch since around Christmas, she said. The signing became official this week.

"It's a nice, close option," Dewey said. "I liked the team and the school."

Dewey met head coach Jessica Kramer prior to this year. She said Kramer attended some of her high school games this year.

"She was enjoyable to talk to," Dewey said. "I would talk to her after the games."

Dewey functioned as one of Reardan's key perimeter players this year, while Curry operated out of the post while extending for midrange jump shots. Both expect those skills to transition to their next stop.

"I'm a pretty good shooter and can dribble pretty well," Dewey said. "I can play defense (too)."

Curry said ECC head coach Jeannie Thompson recruited her with the intentions of making her the team's top post recruit.

"She said she didn't really even plan to go after any other posts," Curry said.

Both girls began to think realistically of a collegiate career around late middle school/early high school. COVID-19 disrupted much of each player's college careers, but both were able to bounce back for solid senior seasons that helped put them back on collegiate radars.

"It didn't really seem realistic until my senior year," Curry said. "I realized I needed to put myself out there and make sure teams wanted to hear from me."

Dewey said she's thought about playing collegiate ball since the beginning of her AAU career for the Spokane Legacy, which was coached by current Reardan head coach Bob Swannack.

Both players gave credit to family members for helping them achieve their athletic goals.

"All the credit goes to my family, probably," Dewey said.

"My mom pushed me along the way and showed me this should be fun," Curry said. "It showed me this should be something I want, not something other people tell me I should do."
