Charles Robert “Bob” Staib III, resident of Vacaville, Calif., passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday Oct. 28, 2021. He touched many lives with his volunteer spirit and optimistic outlook on life.

Bob was born in Wilmington, Del. on Jan. 21, 1935, to Charles Robert Jr. and Louise Caroline Staib. He graduated from P.S. DuPont High School in Wilmington in 1952 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy from Washington State University in 1956 and a Master of Science Degree in Agronomy at the University of Idaho in Moscow in 1959. Bob met the love of his life, Shirley Evelyn Ensor while on a double date while a student at Washington State. They were married on Nov. 10, 1956, in Reardan Wash., nearly 65 years married at the time of his death. Bob and Shirley had three children and lived in Riverside, Carmichael and Napa, Calif. as well as Urbandale, Iowa and Wilmington, De. during Bob’s career as an Agricultural Chemical Sales Representative. In 1995, Bob and Shirley retired to Vacaville, Calif. to be near their daughter and son and grandchildren.

Bob served in the Naval Reserves from 1952 – 1961. As a retiree he learned Bagpipes at the age of 60 and joined the Shriner’s Pipes and Drums Band. He played the Bagpipe at numerous weddings, funerals, and events. He was a member of Masons, Shrine, Sons in Retirement (SIR’s), Elks and was active in leadership roles until his health was a limitation. Bob loved golf all his life and enjoyed bowling and low stakes poker during his senior years. He traveled with Shirley to interesting locations both near and far and looked forward to their weekly date night.

One of Bob’s most significant memories in the history of the world was when he was on the top deck of the Empire State Building in New York City on a day trip with the Wilmington, Delaware YMCA the very moment when President Harry S. Truman announced the Japanese surrender and the end of World War II on Aug. 14, 1945. Bob was a devoted Christian and advised those close to him to love God, your family, and your friends. Pray for them daily and always ask for God’s blessing on every major endeavor you embark upon.

Bob is survived by his loving wife Shirley Staib, daughter Karen (Harrison) Roth, son Curt Staib, son-in-law Mike Sissel, brother Carl (Zel) Staib, granddaughter Allison (Jeff) Szasz, grandson Harrison Scott (Sybille) Roth, and Grandson Nick Staib, great-grandsons Logan Szasz and Alexander Szasz, and great-granddaughter Cambria Szasz. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Charles Robert Staib Jr. and Louise Caroline Green Staib, his daughter-in-law Cathy Vulpi Staib, and his daughter Leann Staib Sissel.

A graveside service will be held at the Pleasant View Cemetery near Mondovi, Wash. on July 17, 2022, with family in attendance followed by a potluck Celebration of Life at the First United Methodist Church in Reardan. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children – Northern California, 2425 Stockton Blvd. Sacramento, CA 95817-2215.
